Maybe more respect is needed

Published April 13. 2018 11:27PM

Dear Mr. Frassinelli,

It is not only Muslims who might be disturbed by the nickname “Crusaders.” The Fourth Crusade pretty much wrecked Constantinople, even though the inhabitants were Christians. The problem was they were Orthodox Christians, and I guess the Crusaders thought they were fair game. Pope John Paul II did apologize in 2004, 800 years later. Better late than never.

Jews might also have a problem. As they made their way to the “Holy Land,” Crusaders stopped off at various towns in Germany and France to slaughter thousands of Jews.

As for the Lehighton Indians, Native Americans might feel better if Lehighton were more respectful. The logo I’ve seen is of a Plains Indian in ceremonial regalia. Lenapes did not wear that type of headdress. I don’t think the Lehighton school system has any units on Pennsylvania Indians, and I don’t think it has any relationship with remaining tribes or Indians from this area.

It might follow the example of the Florida State Seminoles. From what I understand, the school has an ongoing relationship with the Seminole tribe.

Sincerely,

Roy Christman,

Lehighton
