Monroe groom-to-be charged with assaulting wedding guest

State police at Stroudsburg are charging a man with sexually assaulting an Oregon woman who was in town to attend his wedding.

Daniel J. Carney, 28, of Stroudsburg, is charged with simple assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse of an unconscious person and indecent assault.

Police said the 29-year-old victim was sexually assaulted in a downstairs men’s locker room at the Shawnee Inn at 8 p.m. Aug. 30.

According to the affidavit, the bridal party spent the afternoon rafting and paddling on the Delaware River, starting at Smithfield Beach and continuing to the Shawnee Inn. The victim said most of the group had been consuming alcohol. She said she had brought a six-pack of beer and some vodka. She said she had three beers and one or two shots of vodka.

The victim recalled being heavily intoxicated and said the group placed her on a raft for safety. She said she recalled being led from the water but did not know what occurred from there until she woke up in the downstairs men’s locker room and Carney was sexually assaulting her.

The victim said Carney’s then-fiancee came into the locker room and began screaming at him.

Surveillance footage showed Carney and the victim entering the locker room. She was unsteady on her feet and swaying.

Carney apologized to her by text the next day. The wedding was Sept. 1.

Police obtained permission from the Monroe County District Attorney’s office to intercept a phone call on Sept. 2 between the victim and Carney. He again apologized and admitted to the interaction. Based on this, police interviewed him and began the investigation.

Charges have been filed at District Magistrate Brian Germano’s office. Carney, represented by attorney James Swetz, is awaiting a preliminary hearing.
