Nesquehoning Historical Society seeks donations to honor mothers
The Nesquehoning Historical Society wants to honor all of the mothers of the community for the vital roles they have played in our families and in the town’s local history.
The roles of motherhood have included the important tasks of being a homemaker and also the many long hours spent working in the factories and shops of Nesquehoning.
Many grown children find that they have inherited boxes of precious photos and mementos from their mothers.
The Nesquehoning Historical Society offers a safe home to honor these memories and to share their meaning with others in the community. The society does this by creating special displays with handwritten notes describing how specific items were used in the families of the individuals who donated their keepsake items to the society.
To facilitate the creation of the display notes for each item, donors are encouraged to write up a paragraph or two of the memories that they associate with each donated item. This way visitors can enjoy the special stories that come along with any given item as they look through the display cases.
Donors are invited to contact Grace Gilkeson at 570-273-4041 to facilitate the process of writing up their thoughts and memories for the items which they would like to donate to the society.
The items in the society’s collection are periodically rotated from the storage areas to the display cases. This way a broader selection can be presented for visitors to enjoy as they travel the halls of the museum.
The Nesquehoning Historical Society also welcomes the donation of display cases and other items needed for the maintenance of the building.
The society hosts community lectures and special history-themed trips for members and guests.
The group meets on the fourth Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m. in the former Nesquehoning Baptist Church.
Annual dues for members are $10.
For those would like to support the work of the society but are unable to attend meetings in person, donations and membership dues may be mailed by check or money order to the Nesquehoning Historical Society at 157 W. Railroad St., Nesquehoning, PA 18240.
