Nesquehoning police to use grant funds for equipment
Nesquehoning has received $106,250 in state gaming funds for use with purchasing needed equipment for its police department.
On Wednesday, Mayor Sam Kitchko told borough council that Nesquehoning received two-thirds the amount it had applied for through the Local Share Account grant. In September, the board approved a resolution to apply for a $153,602 LSA grant for the police department in the hopes of funding the purchase of a 2020 Ford Interceptor, two license plate readers, two surveillance systems and five onboard cameras.
Councilman Louie Paul commended police Chief Sean Smith for stepping up to the plate with getting the grant started.
“It’s going to benefit the town when it comes to crime,” Paul said.
Council also thanked RoniSue Ahner, borough secretary, for getting the materials together for the application.
Kitchko said Smith is now looking into applying for a federal Justice Assistance grant for the remaining funds that are needed.
In other police matters, Kitchko also reported that the police are seeing a rise in criminal arrests and traffic citations.
In 2018, the department handled 124 criminal arrests, 395 traffic citations and 87 nontraffic citations.
In 2019, the number of arrest rose to 187, traffic citations just about doubled to 608 and nontraffic citations dropped slightly to 76.
