Nesquehoning VFW auxiliary meets

The regular monthly meeting of the VFW Auxiliary to Nesquehoning Memorial Post 8008 was held on Oct. 8, at the post home, with President Christa Kattner presiding.

District 20 President Guyette Calles was welcomed.

General Orders 3 were read and filed for action. Two thank-you notes, from the National Veterans Service and Pennsylvania Department President Kelley LePak, were read.

November is Military Families month. Fifty-six cards were sent since the last meeting.

Under community service, 70 hours were reported by those present.

The Hometown Heroes Banner Program has been completed with 115 banners now displayed. Applications for next year are still being accepted and may be picked up and dropped off at the post home. They will be done next year in the order they have been received as poles become available.

The overwhelming response has been greatly appreciated and the feedback has been very positive.

A community bloodmobile drive was held on Sept. 17 with two members donating at the collection.

Information on the Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen program have been delivered to Panther Valley High School.

Under legislation, 10 emails have been sent to elected officials regarding veterans bills.

Boscov’s “Friends Helping Friends” shopping passes will be available until Oct. 16. The discount shopping day is Oct. 17.

The Pallet Paint evening was successful and another one will be scheduled for the spring.

The Veterans Day Parade, hosted by Nesquehoning, will be held on Nov. 5, beginning at 1:45 p.m. Parade meetings will be held Oct. 15 and 29, both at 6 p.m. at the post home.

Buddy Poppies will be available at Redner’s on Nov. 3 and 4.

A possible walk through may be scheduled for the evening before the parade to view the banners throughout town, depending on public interest.

Donations were made to the department president’s special project, Erie Diabetes Walk, Hurricane Relief and the Valor Stand Down Program.

Tentative date for the Children’s Christmas Party is Dec. 9; a definite date will be set at the next UVO meeting on Oct. 18. The auxiliary Christmas party has a possible date of Dec. 14 at Lengyel’s, 6:30 p.m.

Calles conducted her inspection of the auxiliary and found it in good working order for the year.

The next regular meeting is scheduled for 1 p.m. Nov. 12, subject to change if the Veterans Day parade has to use the rain date.
