NJ man charged after fleeing police
A New Jersey man is in the Monroe County Correctional Facility in Snydersville, after being charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and fleeing police.
Anthony Williams, 32, of Newark, was captured by Pocono Mountain Regional Police after he fled from the scene of the incident at 6:01 p.m. Feb. 4.
He is also charged with resisting arrest, reckless endangerment, simple assault, accidents with an attended motor vehicle and multiple summary offenses.
Police said he was involved in a chase that began at routes 115 and 940 in Tobyhanna Township, where an officer observed Williams traveling on Route 940 at a high rate of speed, going westbound in the eastbound lane of travel. Police said the vehicle Williams was driving almost struck the police vehicle and others that were in front of him.
When the officer turned around and attempted to stop Williams, he continued west on Route 940 at a high rate of speed, forcing multiple vehicles off the roadway and striking three vehicles causing minor damages. The chase proceeded onto Route 115 where Williams’ vehicle became disabled near the Monroe/Luzerne County line.
Police said as the officer got out of his vehicle, Williams put his vehicle into reverse and accelerated toward the officer, striking the patrol car. He ran into the woods, but was caught, police said.
