No tax hike expected in Nesquehoning

Published November 29. 2018 01:20PM

Nesquehoning residents should expect to see their borough taxes stay the same in 2019.

During Wednesday’s borough council meeting, council adopted its preliminary budget, which calls for no increase, keeping the total millage to 18.55.

That means that a $100,000 home assessed at $50,000 will again pay the same amount in real estate taxes as in 2018.

The breakdown for the $1,849,212.78 spending plan call for 16.5 mills going to the general fund, 1.75 mills going to fire protection and 0.3 mills going to recreation.

Councilman Frank Jacobs announced that the tentative budget will be reviewed by the committee before final adoption at council’s December meeting.

In other matters, Nesquehoning Hose Company fire Chief John McArdle reminds residents that with colder weather here, they should have their heating systems properly cleaned and maintained.

“With the start of the heating season, (the fire departments) already received two carbon monoxide calls,” he said.

McArdle reminds residents to check batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors and change them if necessary.

He added that the department is purchasing two CO detectors that they will loan to residents who have CO calls until they purchase one of their own.

“We’re not going to give them (a CO detector) but we are going to try and eliminate people being in harm’s way,” McArdle said.
