Pleasant Valley, Jim Thorpe pick up baseball victories

Pleasant Valley and Jim Thorpe picked up baseball wins in local action of Friday.

BASEBALL

Pleasant Vy.

-Lehighton

Pleasant Valley came up with a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to pull out a 5-4 win over Lehighton in Mountain Valley Conference action.

Lehighton (13-6, 6-5) scored two in the first and two more in the fourth and held a 4-2 lead heading into the sixth inning. Pleasant Valley (9-8, 7-3) scored a run in the sixth before adding the tying and winning run.

Aaron Cetnar had two hits, one RBI and two runs scored for the Bears, while Adrian Concepcion also added two hits, one RBI and scored a run. Robert get was also two-for-four.

Lehighton's Jacen Nalesnik had three hits and scored a run, while Steven Shanton had a hit and two RBI's and Billy Angst had a hit and scored a run.

Howie Stevens was the winning pitcher, while A.J. Wenrich suffered the loss.

Mitch Peters tossed a five-hitter and Dane Ciavarella had a big day at the plate as Jim Thorpe cruised to a 14-1 non-league win over Moravian Academy.

Peters, who struck out eight batters, allowed a first-inning run and then shut down the Lions the rest of the way.

Ciavarella went 4-for-5 with a double and two triples. He scored two runs and knocked in three. The Olympians (2-15) also received a double from John Sheehan and a hit, RBI and two runs scored from Mitch Hoffman.

In a Schuylkill League Division 1 game from Thursday, Pine Grove was outhit but managed to gain a 13-8 win.

Steve Zimmerman paced the Cardinals with a double and a triple.

For the Olympians, Shane Snisky was 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Pen Argyl hung on to a narrow lead to gain a 6-5 Colonial League win over Northern Lehigh.

Tommy Young knocked in two runs for the Knights, while Jay Young and Conor Gum each doubled for the winners.

The Bulldogs' Kyle Schomp drove home two runs, while Kris Seiler collected a double.

Marian-Minersville

The Miners scored eight runs in the second inning and six more in the third to hand Marian a 14-4 loss in five innings.

James Brophy had the big hit for Minersville as he hit a grand slam home run in the second inning. Frank Nietz had two singles and one RBI and Dylan Lathan added two singles for Marian (8-6, 5-5).

Minersville blanked Marian for a 4-0 Schuylkill League victory.

The Battlin' Miners' Sara Wallasavage finished with a single, homerun, run scored and two RBIs, while Lauren Leshko added two singles.

Gabby Cann, Sam Faust, Jeanna Cannon, Lindsay Nemeth and Alex Stroia accounted for the Fillies' hits.

Marian slips to 8-9 overall and 4-7 in the league.

Kaycie Andrew and Ashley Acabou both scored goals to lift Lehighton to a 2-0 non-league win over Northern Lehigh.

The teams only played one half due to inclement weather.

The Indians had a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Lehighton keeper Katie Troutman made five saves for the shutout while Nolehi's Kaylee Owens made two stops.

The winners improved to 5-10-1 while the Bulldogs dropped to 3-13-1.
