Marian, Thorpe girls win on road

The Marian and Jim Thorpe girls both registered their 10th win of the season by gaining Schuylkill League road wins Thursday.

The Fillies defeated Lourdes in a Division 2-3 crossover game while the Olympians edged Pine Grove in Division 1 action.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Marian-Lourdes

Marian remained undefeated in league play by posting a 41-36 victory over host Lourdes.

The Fillies, who used a 10-2 run to close the game and earn the win, improved to 10-2 overall and 6-0 in Schuylkill League Division 3.

Kaysi McLaughlin scored a team-high 11 points, including five in the fourth quarter. Sam Faust finished with eight points for the winners while Gabby Green chipped in with seven.

For the Red Raiders (11-2; 4-2), Christina Perles tallied 11 points.

In the JV game, Marian posted a 32-15 win.

Jim Thorpe-Pine Grove

Jim Thorpe jumped out to an early lead and held off Pine Grove down the stretch to post a 42-36 Schuylkill League Division 1 win.

Celeste Robinson scored eight of her game-high 23 points in the first quarter as the Olympians opened up a 10-3 advantage.

Thorpe (10-1; 4-1) also received 11 points from Chelsea Smelas.

For the Cardinals, who fell to 8-5 overall and 2-3 in the league, Thompson and Shannon Zimmerman each finished with nine points.

In the JV game, the Olympians gained a 41-33 win.

Weatherly-Tri-Valley

Tri-Valley's Tara Nahodil outscored the entire Weatherly team as the Bulldogs rolled to a 56-19 Schuylkill League win.

Nahodil finished with a game-high 21 points while teammate Juli Weber added 17. Tri-Valley is now 14-0 overall and 6-0 in Division 2 play.

The Wreckers (2-9; 1-5 in Division 3) received a team-high six points from Erin Dougherty.

In the JV game, the Bulldogs cruised to a 52-18 win.

SWIMMING

Tamaqua-Sch. Haven

Tamaqua split its meet with Schuylkill have as the Lady Raiders won 120-60 while the boys fell 124-44 to the Hurricanes.

Tamaqua's Joann Butkus broke a team record in winning the 200 freestyle in 2:01.91. She also placed first in 100 freestyle and was part of two winning relays. Teammate Danielle DeCindio also won two events, the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, while helping her team sweep the relays.

For Schuylkill Haven, Austin Bayliff, Sean Spotts and Dylan Slotterback all won two individual events.

Tamaqua lost to Blue Mountain 53-41.

For the Blue Raiders (6-5), Connor Hartung had a game high 14 points while Ernie Shilko added nine points.

8TH GRADE

BASKETBALL

Tamaqua continued its winning ways by defeating Blue Mountain 26-16.

Zach Colmean led the Raiders (9-2) with 11 points, while Russel Blaker added eight.
