Dead deer pick-up

If residents find any dead deer along Chestnuthill Township roads, the number to call now is (570) 643-6100, the Waste Authority, instead of Vector Control's special deer pick-up line.

That entity has entered into an agreement with Monroe County to continue the services of picking up, removing and disposing of dead deer from Monroe County's roadways as of Jan. 13.

When calling, give the road and any intersecting roads - and township, of course- as to where the deer is located.

Other than the fact that dead deer are unsightly, they pose a real problem with odor and other vectors that might be enticed by the carcasses, say Waste Authority personnel, adding that the Authority's ultimate goal is to keep Monroe's roads clean and pristine.

PV School Board

The Board of Education for the Pleasant Valley School District will meet at 8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 26, at the District Office in Brodheadsville.

Lions volunteer

The Western Pocono Lions met last Wednesday. Among the upcoming volunteer services they are going to provide are: newspaper judging, on Saturday, Jan. 28, beginning at 9 a.m., with help from Western Pocono Lioness Club members, at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville; being a part of the Night of Unity scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 28, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Pleasant Valley High School in Brodheadsville; sponsoring a Miller-Keystone Blood Drive from 1 to 6 p.m., Thursday, March 22, at Zion United Lutheran in Brodheadsville; being involved in the BonTon Community fund-raiser that benefits a community service organization's budget to do good works; and hosting a bowling fund-raiser in April.

Monroe Seniors

The Monroe County Seniors meeting at Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, will gather again on Friday, Jan. 27, beginning at 9 a.m.

Number increase

During the quarterly meeting of the tax-dollar supported Monroe County food pantries last week, the PVEN Community Service Center's numbers from Chestnuthill Township were second highest of the six pantries in families served during the month of Dec. 2011. The family total was 363 families with 1,136 members. Only the Salvation Army's food pantry served more.

The PVEN serves all of the West End and some contiguous areas as well.

Snow fun

The West End Park & Open Space Commission will host sled riding from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Pleasant Valley Intermediate School, Polk Township Road, on Saturday, Jan. 28, conditions allowing, says Bernie Kozen, Executive Director, West End Park & Open Space Commission, located in the Chestnuthill municipal complex in Brodheadsville.

Participants are asked to bring sleds. Hot cocoa and treats will be provided.
