Year-end report given

A total of 5,074 cases were started in 2016 in the office of Carbon County Prothonotary Joann M. Behrens, according to an annual statistical report released by the officeholder. A breakdown of the 2015 cases is as follows:

Assessment appeals, 13; civil actions, 330; custody complaints, 242; magisterial district appeals, 54; declaratory judgments, 2; divorce complaints, 196; complains in ejectment, 46; eminent domain/declaration of taking, 1; license appeals, 21; mandamus actions, 2; mortgage foreclosure complaints, 258; name change petitions, 9; partition complaints, 3; protection from abuse petitions, 310; quiet title actions, 13; replevin complaints, 4; tax sales, 7; zoning appeal, 1; auditor/financial reports, 3; court appointments, 13; court rules, 4; judgments, 3,041; miscellaneous cases, 29; official oath, 1; paternity suits, 5; protection from abuse from sexual violent individual, 5; stipulations/waivers of Liens, 43; and writs of execution, 418. The office also received and processed 1,392 applications for U.S. Passport and rendered assistance to the public in 395 passport renewal applications since February 2016.

Behrens' financial report shows $426,595.70 was generated as follows:

Prothonotary's fees, $352,849.50; PFA Surcharge, courts, $524.60; PFA Surcharge, Sheriff, $574.90; custody fees, $11,575; data processing charges, $61,026.49; interest income, $44.4; and remote access fees, $20,900.

The report points out departmental operational expenses for the past year amounted to $321,254, meaning the prothonotary's office generated a profit of $105,341.70 for the county in 2016.

The prothonotary also remitted $50,631.37 to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Revenue, representing state fees collected locally, and $774.40 to the Administrative Offices of the Pennsylvania Courts, this being surcharges on new custody cases in accordance with Act 119 of 1996. Another $17,170 was deposited in the Prothonotary's Automation Fund for future use in automating the office.
