Clymer in consis
Hofstra's Ben Clymer won his first-round matchup Thursday in the NCAA Wrestling Championships but couldn't advance to the quarterfinal round.
Clymer, a graduate of Northwestern Lehigh and former TIMES NEWS area Wrestler of the Year, entered the NCAAs as the 11th seed at 184 pounds. The senior earned a second period escape in his bout with Ty Vinson of Oregon State and made it stand up in gaining a 1-0 victory.
That win pushed his record to 30-6 and gave him a new season-high for victories.
Looking for No. 31 in the second round, Clymer instead dropped a 10-2 major to Quentin Wright of Penn State. Wright, the sixth-seed at 184 and a defending NCAA champion, used four takedowns, an escape and riding time advantage to pile up the points. Clymer managed just two escapes in the bout.
The loss dropped the Germansville native to the consolation rounds. He was scheduled to take on Missouri's Mike Larson this morning.
Clymer is a two-time Colonial Athletic Association champion and three-time NCAA qualifier.
This year's tournament is being held in St. Louis.
