Ultimate disrespect to those we should honor

Published March 17. 2012 09:01AM

Dear Editor:

While exercising at one of our local fitness centers in Palmerton, an acquaintance of mine, who is very very active in the local Legion organization - a current commander to be exact and who I've known and respected for many years as our children went to school together were having a conversation.

Not having had the honor or privilege to serve myself, but my mother and father are and both were World War II veterans. He proceeded to tell me about how difficult and expensive it has become for him and fellow Legion volunteers to try to recruit local high school bands, musical groups, community organizations, etc. to participate in parades, veteran organization events and so on to honor our heroes.

One one occasion, he mentioned a high school band wanting $1,500 to come and perform.

I certainly am not ignorant to the expenses involved in transporting a bus load of musicians, fuel, drivers, insurance, etc. but $1,500. Are you kidding me?

I also realize our local schools are under severe budget restraints and need to monitor outside costs to be responsible to the taxpayers. No new news there,

Not necessarily knowing all the facts, this has all the smell of a fundraising effort on the backs of the very same people who gave us the freedom to even march down our town streets, if this is indeed true. Shame on those responsible for taking an approach like this the ultimate in disrespect bestowed to those we should honor.
