LAOH Irish history essay winners listed

The sixth, seventh and eighth grade students from St. Joseph's Regional Academy participated in the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians Irish history essay contest. The essay was about Annie Moore, a young Irish girl who was the first immigrant (passenger) registered to pass through the now world famous immigration station Ellis Island on Jan. 1, 1892.

The winners were: Kabie Arndt, sixth grade, first place; Danielle Spillman, eighth grade, second place; Maureen Kloap, eighth grade, third place; Sean Choley, seventh grade, and Noah Goldberg, eighth grade, both honorable mention.

Peggy Sue Harris, Irish historian and Sharon Choley, president of the Molly Maguire's Division 1, Carbon County presented the students with certificates on March 16, at the Irish Festival at SJRA. The essays were forwarded to the PA State Irish Historian for state competition. Winners of the state contest will be announced in late April.
