American Cancer Society Telethon set for April 14, 15 at Penn's Peak

Published April 12. 2012 05:00PM

The 33rd annual Carbon-Tamaqua ACS Telethon airs Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15 live from Penn's Peak beginning at noon and continuing until midnight each day.

The telethon can be found on Blue Ridge Cable TV 13 and Service Electric TV channel 22, but area residents are encouraged to come and see the live performances of some of the area's best talent, while supporting the ACS at Penn's Peak, located on Maury Road in Jim Thorpe.

There is no charge for admission and dining services are available at Roadies Restaurant located at The Peak.

In addition to the finest of local talent, interviews throughout the program will feature medical professionals, cancer survivors and individuals touched by the disease. Each year Courage Awards are presented to individuals who have shown great strength and determination in their battles against cancer.

Those wishing to make a personal donation to this year's telethon can stop by the Peak or call in a pledge or visit the telethon website at www.cancertelethon.org/telethon.

The local ACS unit places a strong emphasis on the organization's mission: To eliminate cancer as the major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy and service.

While deaths due to cancer are down, there remains much work to do. The local telethon provides financial support, so that one day a cure will be found.
