Historical society

The Summit Hill Historical Society will hold its monthly meeting tonight at 6 o'clock in the society's museum on West Ludlow Street. Lee Mantz, president, will be in charge of the business session.

A discussion will take place regarding the club's upcoming Memorial Day weekend activities. Other matters to be discussed include the Jim Thorpe Chamber of Commerce visitors' guide and participation in the Heritage Festival scheduled to be held Sept. 15 at the Mauch Chunk Lake Park.

Other upcoming meetings of the society are scheduled for June 20, July 18 and Aug. 15.

Holy day

Catholics in the region will celebrate the feast of the Ascension of the Lord tomorrow, a holy day of obligation. Masses will be celebrated at noon and 6 p.m. tomorrow in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Summit Hill, and at 6 o'clock tonight and 9 a.m. tomorrow in St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Lansford.

Scripture sharing

The weekly scripture sharing program at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Summit Hill, will continue tonight with a session at 7 o'clock in the parish rectory.

Lions to meet

The monthly meeting of the Summit Hill Lions Club will be held Tuesday, May 22, at 6 p.m. at the Parkview Inn. Judy Midas, first vice president, will chair the session.

The guest speaker will be Sister Bernard Agnes, principal of Marian Catholic High School. The club's scholarship recipients and their parents will be guests of the club.

Members planning to attend must RSVP to Midas.

Service is planned

American Legion Post 316, Summit Hill, will hold its traditional Memorial Day weekend service on Sunday, May 27, at 1 p.m. in St. Joseph Cemetery, White Bear.

The Summit Hill service will follow on Monday, May 28, at 10 a.m. in Ludlow Park.

Democrats to meet

The Jeffersonian Democratic Club, Summit Hill, will hold its monthly meeting on Thursday, May 24, at 7 p.m. in the borough hall. Nathan Halenar, president, will be in charge of the session.

Lansford

St. John Lutheran

Tonight at 7 p.m., St. John's Lutheran Church, 1 E. Abbott St., Lansford, will hold an informal worship. This will be a spiritual, peaceful, evening service with Holy Communion. All are welcome to this relaxed, brief, musical, evening prayer.

For those who wish to come early, a free simple supper is served at 6 p.m., followed by a brief adult Bible study and confirmation program at 6:30.

Nesquehoning

VFW Ladies Auxiliary

The Nesquehoning VFW Ladies Auxiliary met April 24 with President Mandy Breiner presiding.

Donations were made to the Department Flag Fund, the Department President's Love Gift Fund, and along with the Post, a convention ad was approved.

The National Convention Delegates are Maureen Hirochek and Mary Arieta, with Tillie Lakata and Ellen Driesbach as alternates. Department Convention delegates are Hirochek, Missy Hascher and Driesbach, with Audrey Gogal, Lakata and Arieta as alternates.

Nomination and election of officers for 2012-13 were held. A full listing will be available when all appointed offices and committees are filled.

The Auxiliary next met May 8, with Hirochek, treasurer, presiding. The Buddy Poppy promotion is scheduled for the weekend of May 11-12 at Redner's. The Buddy Poppy Queen is Emma Dacey and her court will consist of Olivia Dacey, Christina Dacey, Gabriella Greek, Julia Romankow, Alyssa Kattner, Emma Kattner and Madison Kattner. The Buddy Poppy King is Angelo Greek and his court will consist of Nicholas Ellis, Anthony Ellis, Jacob Ellis and Brody Breiner.

The annual Loyalty Day Program was held May 1. A Miller Bloodmobile collection was held at the Post Home on May 2.

The annual District Convention and meeting will be held on Sunday, May 20, at the Northampton Post. Delegates are Driesbach, Lakata, Hirochek, Mandy Breiner and Arieta. Alternates are Cheri Santore, Ann Marie Reis, Hascher, Gogal and Beatrice Stianchie.

Joint Installation of Officers will be held at 7 p.m., Friday, May 25.

Outlying cemeteries services will be conducted Sunday, May 27. The annual Memorial Day Parade will be held Monday, May 28. Participants are to be at the Recreation Center by 8 a.m. The parade will begin promptly at 8:30 a.m.

The next meeting will be at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, June 12 at the Post Home.

Meed's Food Bank

The Nesquehoning Food Pantry, located in the Meed's Methodist Church, 126 West Catawissa St., will hold its monthly distribution of nonperishable food items to those in need from 1-3:30 p.m., Thursday, May 17. This will be the regular food distribution.

Recipients must reside in the borough of Nesquehoning and fall within TEFAP income guidelines.
