Ascension Mass
Our Lady Queen of Peace church will offer Mass for the Feast of the Ascension, a Holy Day of Obligation, at 5 p.m., Wednesday, May 16, and on Thursday, May 17, at 8 a.m., 12:10 and 7 p.m.
Historical society meets
The Chestnuthill Township Historical Society will meet at 7 p.m., Wednesday, May 16, at the Chestnuthill Township Park Building on Route 715. Township residents are welcome to attend.
At the March meeting, Joe Horn gave a talk about the history of Western Union.
West End Rotary
Sally Karlsmark, of Marcus Monogramming, will speak at the West End Rotary Club's 7:30 a.m. breakfast meeting, Thursday, May 17, at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville. Her topic will be "Running a Small Business."
Zion's Seniors
The Senior Citizen's Group from Zion United Lutheran in Brodheadsville will meet at 11 a.m., Thursday, May 17. Anyone over 50 years old is invited.
Participants are reminded to bring a sandwich. Beverages are provided.
Special Olympics
Pleasant Valley High School will once again host the Special Olympics, to take place Thursday, May 17, with a rain date of May 18.
Anyone having crayons or pages to color may donate them to the school's Leo Club at the high school as the Leos will be hosting a coloring activity for the Olympians not immediately in an event.
Band concert
The Pleasant Valley Middle School will be hosting the school's band concert, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Packaging Event
Kids Against Hunger event is taking place this Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church. Food packets will be made up and used to feed the hungry locally and in Haiti. To help, contact Nancy Joy Koch at monroecokah@hotmail.com, or call (570) 619-8423.
Egg cartons needed
The Garden of Giving is seeking donations of egg cartons for distribution of the eggs the garden's chickens are laying. One may deliver them to the garden at McMichaels Hillside Terrace, on the right of Hillside Drive, or bring them to Effort UMC during regular business hours and have them labeled for the Garden of Giving.
Contemporary service
Effort UMC will hold its next contemporary worship service at 9:45 a.m. Sunday, May 20. Anyone preferring this type of service, regardless of faith heritage, is welcome.
Lioness accessorize
The May meeting of the Western Pocono Lioness Club will be held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, May 22 at the American Legion, Route 209, Gilbert.
The meeting begins with a social time and each member is asked to bring two accessories. This will be followed by the business meeting.
The results of the Holistic Fair will be announced, as well as the prize winners.
The club supports the Pleasant Valley High School Chem Free Party.
An upcoming event is the Patriotic coloring Contest at the Chestnuthill Park from 1-3 p.m. on June 30.

PIC work days
Pride in Chestnuthill has set up spring roadside litter clean up days. The group is scheduled to go out on May 26 and June 9. Rain dates are the following Saturday.
Volunteers will meet at 7 a.m., at the Chestnuthill Township Municipal Building on Route 715 on those dates, unless there is rain, snow, drizzle or temperatures below 40 degrees.
Volunteers are asked to wear rugged jeans, boots and a brightly-colored shirt.
Youngsters 13-18 must be accompanied by a parent.
