Sorority news

Members of the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority met May 9 at the home of Sue Hummel.

Plans for the final fundraiser of the year were discussed and finalized. A used clothing drive will be held June 2 at the American Hose Fire Company. Items, such as clothing and shoes, may be dropped off between the hours of 10 a.m. and noon that day. The installation of officers for 2012-2013 will be held on June 6.

The program included a viewing of a segment of the History Channel's Modern Marvels program, which showcased Capt. Brian Hummel, who was also the evening's guest speaker.

Capt. Hummel spoke of his experiences in Afghanistan, flying U.S. Army Apache helicopters, the subject of his appearance on the Modern Marvels program.

The Army officer also spent time answering questions from sorority members.

He and his wife, Tania, have served overseas tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq. They will be reunited this week when she returns from her most recent tour.

The couple is stationed in Texas.

The next regular meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m., May 23, at the home of Sue Walters. This meeting will include the secret sister birthday party.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Seniors met May 17 at the Tamaqua Community Center with 87 members and one guest, Robert Werley, in attendance. One new member, Norma Lee Burke, was welcomed.

President Jean Machamer conducted the business session. Rose Vallee provided the invocation, entitled "Spring Time." Vice President Nancy Gerber and secretary Joan Anne Garber provided their reports. Vern Balliet was welcomed back and Marge Skymba and Isabelle Brode were added to the sick list.

Plans for the annual picnic and a trip to Knoebel's were finalized.

The meeting concluded with cards and social games.

The group meets every Thursday at 1 p.m., at the community center. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.

Cressona band

The Cressona Band will perform a free concert on June 6 at the Tamaqua ABC Hi Rise, 222 E. Broad St.

The event will begin at 7 p.m. and will include show tunes, marches, overtures and songs of yesteryear.

The concert is being sponsored by Shafer's Pharmacy and Dr. Richard Chwastiak.

The public is welcome to attend.

SS. Peter and Paul

High school and college graduates will be honored at the 8 a.m. Mass on June 3 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Pine Street.

Graduates are reminded to bring their caps and gowns and meet in the parish hall prior to Mass.

First Methodist

The Rev. James Cavallero will officiate at the 10:45 a.m. worship service this Sunday in First United Methodist Church. The service will include Confirmation.

Adult Sunday school meets at 9:30 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the choir will rehearse at noon.

The quilters will meet at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

On June 3, the worship service will include the presentation of the Trevorrow Scholarships and recognition of high school and college graduates.

A family dinner will be held immediately following the service.
