Athletic awards

Pleasant Valley High School will hold its athletic awards program at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 23. One must have a ticket to attend.

Free bread

Every Tuesday, from 2-4 p.m., free bread will be available at the Sun Valley Fire Company in Effort. One should just show up. The Faith Mountain Church in Brodheadsville is sponsoring the event.

Rotary speaker

The West End Rotary Club will welcome Cally Notargiacomo at its breakfast meeting at 7:30 a.m., Thursday, May 24, at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville. She will speak about: Juice Plus, Healthy Lifestyle.

Two speakers

The Western Pocono Lions Club heard from two speakers at its meeting last week.

Michael Sabon explained his proposed Eagle Scout project, a new trail at Mountain View Park in Tannersville.

Primary speakers were Matt Connell, dean of the Monroe Campus for Northampton Community College, and Cathleen Canevari, major gifts officer for the college. They delineated the growth of the college in Monroe County and explained what is being proposed for the new campus just off Route 715 North, approaching Tannersville.

In addition, a report on the bowling fundraiser was presented. Fred Klein, Dave Rowan and Rich Zimmerman managed the event, which raised over $900 to be used for charitable works.

Klein said that he hopes for more bowlers next year so that more funds can be earned. It is a matching funds event for the local Thrivent group.

The Scholarship Committee reported that Patrick Jurczyk and Erin Dougherty are the club's scholarship designees. A letter from Dougherty expressing her surprise and thanks was read.

The group will next meet at the American Legion Post Home on Route 209 in Gilbert.

PV School Board

The Pleasant Valley School District Board of Education will meet at 8 p.m., Thursday, May 24, in the district office.

Safety Fair

GFWC Western Pocono Women's Club is co-sponsoring a free Child Safety Fair with the West End Park and Open Space Commission from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, May 26, at the Chestnuthill Township Park, Route 715, Brodheadsville.

The PA State Police can fingerprint children and check child car seats. The West End Ambulance and West End Fire Company will be present for folks to tour their vehicles and trucks.

A Fire Safety House or simulated "Smoke House" from Tobyhanna Army Depot will demonstrate safe ways to escape a house fire.

To determine the safety of a child's bike, a representative from The Loft in Tannersville will be there from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. for bike inspections. Information for the 911 Address ID Signs will also be available inside the township building.

Food and beverages will be sold by Boy Scout Troop 98.

Free information regarding bike safety, car seats, school bus safety, etc. will be available inside the Chestnuthill Park Building during the fair. For more information, email the club at wpwomensclub@gmail.com.

PVEN needs

The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network's Community Service Center is requesting a variety of pasta for this month, as well as peanut butter and jelly.

Folks may donate items at their participating church or take them to the PVEN in the McIlhaney. Turn in on the road by the Chestnuthill Diner or use Greenview Drive to get to the PVEN site. The building is a former Methodist church.

The Effort UMC is seeking donations of pancake mix and syrup.

Penn State Extension can give readers information on making pancakes from scratch, among them whole wheat, corn and oatmeal pancakes.

Summer hours

Our Lady Queen of Peace church office hours will go into the summer schedule on Tuesday, May 29. Hours will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
