Tigers clinch CL girls cross country title
The Northwestern girls cross country team posted four wins on Tuesday to clinch a perfect regular season and the Colonial League championship.
The Lady Tigers finished with a 26-0 record.
CROSS COUNTRY
Northwestern-Palmerton-Pen Argyl
The Northwestern girls had seven runners place in the top 15 to gain four wins and the league title.
Haley Yost won the girls race with teammate Emma Kemmerer finishing second.
The Tiger boys split their four decisions with Tyler Stelmack taking first.
For Palmerton, the boys earned two wins. David Fitzpatrick was the top Bomber with an eighth place. The girls posted one win, with Andrea Stevko earning 10th place.

The Lehighton girls pulled off a sweep of both East Stroudsburgs, while the boys didn't have enough runners to field a team and dropped both of their races.
Freshman Jen Beers finished second for the Indians while teammate Emily Oldt took fourth. In the boys' race, Lehighton's Daulton Radler was 15th.

Northern Lehigh-Wilson
In Colonial League cross country action, the Northern Lehigh girls finished 3-1. The Bulldogs defeated Wilson, Notre Dame (ES) and Salisbury, but dropped a decision to Bangor.
The Nolehi boys managed a win over Salisbury.
Samantha Corcoran and Rachel Hendricks both finished in the top 10, at fourth and ninth, while the Bulldogs' top male finisher was Matt Pender (18th).

Blue Mountain-Jim Thorpe
Blue Mountain swept Jim Thorpe, 25-15, 25-14, 25-15, in Schuylkill League action.
The Olympians' Riley Carroll had 10 assists, while teammate Shannon Green added 10 digs and five kills. Alexandria Ventrella also chipped in with five kills.
Panther Valley-Pine Grove
Panther Valley took the final two games to earn a 25-18, 20-25, 25-23, 25-17 Schuylkill League victory over Pine Grove.
Amy Yusella led the Panthers' attack with 13 kills. Teammate Chrissy Micholik chipped in with nine service points, eight kills, five digs and four aces. PV's Deanna Focht added 11 service points, six kills and six digs.
The Panthers improved to 10-3 (8-3).
Panther Valley also won the JV contest, 18-25, 25-15, 25-15.
Pleasant Vy.-PM West
Pleasant Valley cruised to a 25-9, 25-13, 25-15 Mountain Valley Conference win over Pocono Mountain West.
Breanna Joseph led the way for PV with 10 kills, two aces and two blocks, while Kiersten Griesback had nine assists. Andrea Giardina had four aces and three digs and Mackenzie Dorney chipped in five kills, two aces and two digs.
With the win, Pleasant Valley improves to 9-0 in the MVC.
Pottsville-Tamaqua
Pottsville swept Tamaqua, 25-15, 25-18, 25-12, en route to the Schulkill League victory.
Sarah Paluck led the Raiders with 12 digs and four kills. Teammate Jordan Reabold added three digs, two kills and two blocks.
Shenandoah-Marian
Marian improved to 11-0 with a 25-12, 25-23, 25-13 Schuylkill League win over Shenandoah Valley.
In the match, MaryKate Sherkness reached 1,000 kills in her career. Sherkness finished with 19 kills, eight aces and 14 digs.
Teammate Nikki Callavechio had four aces and 19 digs, Emily Pilla had four kills, four digs, and two blocks, and Abby O'Donnell had 29 assists, three aces and four digs.
Weatherly-Mah. Area
Mahanoy Area posted a sweep of Weatherly, winning the Schuylkill League match 25-19, 25-19, 25-16.
Alicia Panzarella was big for the Wreckers with nine kills, 30 digs and two aces. Teammate Jess Adamczyk added three kills, six digs and five blocks, while Sara Dolinsky finished with three kills, 15 digs and two aces.
Mahanoy also won the JV contest 25-18, 25-19.
ES South-Lehighton
Jacki Jordan had 12 kills and 17 digs to help lead Lehighton to a 25-22, 25-21, 19-25, 25-20 Mountain Valley Conference win over East Stroudsburg South.
Anne Zurn added seven kills and five digs while Natalie Zurn contributed three kills and 28 digs. The Indians also received 27 assists, four kill and two digs from Krista Rehrig.
Lehighton also won the JV match 25-19, 10-25, 17-15.
BOYS SOCCER
Jim Thorpe-Pottsville
Shavinsky Thomas scored in overtime to lift Pottsville to a 3-2 Schuylkill League win over Jim Thorpe.
The Olympians forced the extra period when Corey Ligenza took a feed from Mike Principe and scored his second goal of the game with 9:42 left to play.
For the Crimson Tide, Mason Cleary had both his team's goals in regulation while Carlos Rivera assisted on the game-winner.
Thorpe keeper Justin Kaminski finished with 25 saves.
Catasauqua-No. Lehigh
Northern Lehigh moved to 10-2 on the year with its 2-1 victory over Catasauqua in Colonial League soccer action.
Both of the Bulldogs' goals were scored by Channing Shiffert. Jimmy Bilger assisted on one of them.
N. Dame ES-Palmerton
Palmerton blanked Colonial League foe Notre Dame-ES, 4-0.
The Bombers' were paced by Lee Shehadeh's two goals. Dylan Furry and Nick Fiouris each added another.
Palmerton (2-12) racked up 22 shots on net to Notre Dame's three.
PM East-Pleasant Vy.
Pleasant Valley's Aaron Cetnar scored the game's only goal and helped his team to a 1-0 Mountain Valley Conference win over Pocono Mountain East.
Mike Masullo assisted on the lone tally.
Pleasant Valley's record is now 8-7-2.
Nativity-Tamaqua
Jake Fegley and Josh Delp scored two goals apiece to lead Tamaqua to a 4-0 shutout win over Nativity.
Fegley scored both of his goals in the first half, while Delp tallied each of his in the second. Fegley also had an assist.
Also recording assists for the Raiders were Cesare Picone and Alan Duffy-Guy.
Tyler Cimino made six saves en route to the shutout.
Lourdes-Weatherly
Dylan McDonald scored two goals and led Weatherly to a 2-0 Schuylkill League shutout victory over Lourdes.
Charlie Wallish earned an assist for the Wreckers.
Weatherly goalie Samson Walton made nine saves in net to preserve the shutout.
GIRLS SOCCER
Tamaqua-Pine Grove
Tamaqua got out to an early lead and cruised to a 6-1 Schuylkill League win over Pine Grove.
Kayla Hope recorded a hat trick for the Lady Raiders (13-1,10-1) in the first half. Brynn Lehatto added a goal to make for a 4-1 halftime lead.
Kailee Rottet then added two goals in the second half. Goalie Tanisha Farber recorded nine saves for her first varsity win.
FIELD HOCKEY
Lehighton-PM West
Lehighton cruised to a 6-0 Mountain Valley Conference win over Pocono Mountain West.
The Indians, who raced to a 4-0 halftime lead, received two goals from both Sarah Keer and Kaycie Andrew.
Emily Mantz and Rachel Werley also tallied for Lehighton, while Steph Slaw had an assist.
Northwestern-Bangor
A hat trick by Elena Kotretsos lifted Bangor to a 4-1 Colonial League win over Northwestern.
Tiffany Gumina scored the only goal for the Lady Tigers (9-4-3).
The Slaters remained unbeaten at 14-0-2.
