Colts finish second in Schuylkill golf

Marian gave perennial power Blue Mountain a scare but the Eagles survived to win the Schuylkill League golf championship on Wednesday.

Schuylkill Championships

Blue Mountain ran its streak of consecutive Schuylkill League golf championships to 14 straight but it wasn't easy.

The Blue Eagles shot a 332 to edge second place Marian by just three stokes. The Colts' 335 was enough for them to finish ahead of third place Pottsville (356) and fourth place Williams Valley (386).

The title match was played at Mountain Valley Golf Course in windy conditions.

Blue Mountain's James Bromwell took medalist honors with a 78. Marian's Mike Gottstein was right behind with a 79.

The Colts' other top golfers were Josh Green (82), Nick Kweder (86) and Mark Postupack (88).

FIELD HOCKEY

No. Lehigh-Northwestern

Northern Lehigh and Northwestern battled to a 1-1 overtime tie in Colonial League action..

The Tigers' Sam Partington scored off a feed from Tiff Gumina only to see the Lady 'Dawgs' Shannon Weil tie the game up with an unassisted goal.

The goalies had pivotal roles with the pressure mounting as the Tigers' Lorraine Feinour had eight saves and Bulldogs counterpart Nicole Horn denied seven shots.

Northern Lehigh moves to 7-3-2. Northwestern is now 5-3-2.

ES South-Lehighton

Lehighton and East Stroudsburg North tied 1-1 in a Mountain Valley Conference game..

Nicole Barrett tallied the initial score of the night for South at the 17:05 mark of the first half.

The Indians tied it up at the 8:39 point of the second half when Amelia Waibel scored the Lehighton goal off an assist from Rachel Werley.

Lehighton goalies Kristina Schnell and Lauren Burrows combined for eight saves.

Lehighton goes to 7-5-2 overall, 6-2-2 in the MVC. The Tiberwolves are now 4-8-1 overall.

Bangor-Palmerton are c

Bangor visited Palmerton and breezed to a 7-0 victory.

Seven different players scored for the Slaters, who had a 19-3 advantage in shots.

BOYS SOCCER

Tamaqua-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe grabbed a 2-1 lead at the break and held on for the 3-2 win over Tamaqua in the Schuylkill League.

Corey Ligenza had all three of goals for the Olympians (5-7). Matt Rich and Shane Bleicher-Otto had one assist each.

For the Raiders (6-4), Victor Lima had both scores. Ron Olesnovich had an assist.

Justin Kaminski (11 saves) and Steven Principe (seven saves) shared the goalie duties for Jim Thorpe. Tyler Cimino had seven saves for Tamaqua.

PM West-Pleasant Vy.

The Bears rolled Pocono West in MVC soccer action, 4-0.

Jack Wathen, Connor Phillips, Justin Habick and Harris Sabobic all recorded scores for Pleasant Valley.

Wilson-Palmerton

Wilson came on top with a 2-1 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Gabe Scott accounted for the Bombers' lone goal off an assist from Spencer Shigo.

The Bombers outshot the Warriors 5-4. Brett Snyder grabbed two saves between the Bombers' posts.

Palmerton slips to 1-11 overall and 0-9 in the CL.

Lehighton-ES South

Five different players scored as East Stroudsburg South rolled to a 5-1 Mountain Valley Conference win over Lehighton.

Austin Schlosser took in a perfect set-up from Anthony Rossino to account for the Indians' lone goal.

Lehighton falls to 2-10 overall and 1-9 in the MVC.

GIRLS TENNIS

Freeland MMI-Jim Thorpe

Gabbie Binder and Haley Cope stepped up in singles to help the Lady Olympians pull out a 3-2 win over Freeland MMI.

The other big Jim Thorpe win came at number one doubles, where Gabby Kline and Carly Marzen nabbed a deep three-setter.

The Olympians improve to 4-10.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Tamaqua-Hazleton

Tamaqua managed to persist through a long five-setter against Hazleton, 25-21, 21-25, 18-25, 25-17, 15-13.

Sarah Paluck had a monster outing, compiling 20 kills, 11 digs and four aces for the Raiders. Teammates Sarah Lesisko (three aces, four kills, two digs) and Devan Sweeney (five kills, two blocks, five digs) added to the team effort.

Hazleton pulled out the JV contest, 2-1.

Panther Valley-Halifax

Halifax edged Panther Valley in a battele of Schuylkill League Division 2 contenders, 25-12, 25-22, 14-25, 20-25, 15-9.

Chrissy Micholik paced the Panthers with 20 assists, 16 kills and eight service points, while Amy Yusella finished with 14 kills, 12 digs, four service points and three blocks.

Kristyn Gates contribued with 15 service points and four aces, while Richelle Vanhorn chipped in with 15 assists, 10 service points and an ace.

Panther Valley slips to 8-3 overall and 6-3 in league play. The Panthers are now in a four-way tie for first in Division 2 with Halifax, Lourdes and Pine Grove.
