The Marian girls won the Schuylkill League golf championship on Thursday to highlight the area scholastic sports roundup.

GOLF

Schuylkill League Girls Tournament

The Marian girls won the Schuylkill League championship on Thursday, winning the trophy with a score of 228.

Arianna Srinivasan and Monica Wasik each shot a 114 to lead the Fillies to victory. Teammate Stephanie Peel was right behind the two with a fifth-place finish at 119.

The top two girls from each team scored in the event.

BOYS SOCCER

Jim Thorpe-Schuylkill Haven

Schuylkill Haven cruised to a 9-0 win over visiting Jim Thorpe.

Kenny Eiler led the Hurricanes with a hat trick and two assists, while Ian Hower added a hat trick and an assist.

Northwestern-Palmerton

Northwestern did its scoring in the first half to post a 2-0 Colonial League victory over Palmerton.

Boston Furjanic and Ryan McNally accounted for the Tigers' two goals. Teammate Ben Gangaware recorded an assist.

Northwestern outshot Palmerton 19-6. The Bombers' keeper Codi Sigley finished with 17 saves while Talon Williams ended up with six in front of the Tigers' net.

Tamaqua-Pottsville

Thomas Shavinsky scored the winning goal with 47 seconds left in the game to lift Pottsville to a 3-2 Schuylkill League victory over visiting Tamaqua.

The Blue Raiders' Ben Miller scored his team's first goal 44 seconds into the second half off an assist from Stevie Balliet. Almost three minutes later, Miller set up Jake Fegley's goal, which gave the Blue Raiders their only lead of the night.

Tyler Cimino grabbed six saves in the Blue Raiders' net.

GIRLS SOCCER

Tamaqua-Pottsville

Pottsville knocked Tamaqua from the unbeaten ranks by posting a 2-0 Schuylkill League victory.

After a scoreless first half, Sarah Lombel gave the Tide a 1-0 lead before teammate Erin Strickland followed with an insurance goal to help seal the win.

The Blue Raiders' keeper Chey Bates recorded eights saves in goal, while the Tides' Sienna Smith posted nine saves to earn a shutout victory.

Tamaqua falls to 11-1 overall and 8-1 in the league.

VOLLEYBALL

Jim Thorpe-North Schuylkill

North Schuylkill swept Jim Thorpe, 25-3, 25-15, 25-12 in Schuylkill League action.

Shannon Green paced the Olympians' attack with five blocks and six digs. Amanda Petrin added eight digs and Melissa Weber recorded two kills.

In the JV games, Jim Thorpe scored a 25-21, 16-25, 25-13 win.

Tamaqua-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain knocked off Tamaqua on the volleyball court, winning 25-18, 21-25, 25-9, 25-19.

The Raiders were led by Sarah Paluck and her nine kills and six digs. Sarah Lesisko added 10 service points with four aces. Rylee Devlin added four blocks.

Marian-Weatherly

Marian swept Weatherly 25-11, 25-16, 25-8 in a Schuylkill League match.

Marykate Sherkness did a little bit of everything for the Fillies, as she recorded 17 kills, seven aces and six digs. Teammates Nicole Collevechio (16 digs) and Abby O'Donnell (23 assists) also made major contributions.

Alicia Panzarella paced the Wreckers' attack with 30 digs and four kills. Sara Delinsky chipped in with 19 digs and four kills. Alyssa Miller added 11 digs and four kills.

GIRLS TENNIS

ACC-Tamaqua

Allentown Central Catholic blanked Tamaqua, 5-0.

Linda Nguyen, Caroline Bondi and Colleen Topper swept singles' play for the Vikettes.

Christine Wittner/Josie Airoldi (ACC) def. Taylor Urban/Vicki Krouse 6-2, 6-1; Bronte Grigoruk/Jen Hildebrandt (ACC) def. Emily Hansler/Laine Confer 8-1 proset.

Jim Thorpe-So. Lehigh

Southern Lehigh knocked off Jim Thorpe, 4-1 in non-league action.

The only Olympian to win on the day was No. 1 singles player Kasey Herman, who posted a 7-6 (11-9), 1-6, 10-6 victory. After the players split the first two sets, the match was decided in a super-tiebreaker.

The Olympians drop to 4-11 on the year.

FIELD HOCKEY

Northwestern-Palmerton

Northwestern scored three second-half goals and came from behind to beat Palmerton, 4-2 in Colonial League play.

Tiffany Gumina, Sam Partington, Caileigh Landrigan and Paige Horner each scored once for the Lady Tigers.

The Bombers' two goals came from Morgan Myers and Kyla Rodrigues in the first half.
