Annual Creche/Nativity Display this weekend in Jim Thorpe
St. John's Lutheran Church, 319 South Ave. (Heights) in Jim Thorpe will welcome the public to its fourth annual Creche/Nativity Display on Saturday, Dec. 3 and Sunday, Dec. 4 from noon to 5 p.m. each day.
This year's display will feature close to 250 different nativity items made from a variety of materials such as pewter, tin, cloth, ceramic, wood, bees wax and more.
The items range in age from new to very old. There are nativities on display with figures that are barely an inch high, and others that are a couple of feet tall.
They come in different styles as well, such as jewelry, candy tins and banners, as well as the standard multi-piece manger scene.
The items on display come from all over the world. Some are cherished family treasures and some are new, flea market finds.
Betty Ann McElhenney, who co-chairs the event with Bonnie Hoffman, says the display started out as a way to encourage church members to set up a nativity scene in their own home.
"It's grown so much, now people are going out and collecting them!" says McElhenney.
She recalls the first year they had about 100 pieces on display. The following year, it grew to about 130.
She is thrilled that each year more church members are involved, and there are more nativities to share with the public.
In addition to church members, former members are welcome to return with their special pieces.
Admission to the creche/nativity display is free and light refreshments will be served.
The church is easy to find, 209 south to left on Walnut Avenue (just past DeeZines Florist), follow Walnut Avenue to right on Center Avenue, proceed two blocks to left on Spruce and then left onto South Avenue.
The church is on the right and there is a parking lot across the street. Directional signs will also be posted to help guide folks to the church.
A map can also be found on the church's website at stjohnsinjimthorpe.org or you may get directions by calling the church at (570) 325-4255.
