Donation given
Alyse Mitten, from the Mid-Atlantic Community Papers Association was the speaker at the Western Pocono Lions Club meeting last week. Several members of the Western Pocono Lioness Club attended. Members of both groups judged the advertising for the association's annual competition last year, which Lions Club members had done by themselves previously.
In recognition of their service to the association, Mitten presented a check to the Lions for the Lions Clubs International Foundation.
Western Pocono Lioness
When the Western Pocono Lioness Club met last week, three special guests attended, including District Governor Scott Dudley and his parents, PDGs Ed and Judy Dudley. DG Scott installed two new Lioness, Vera Lovewell and Kim Manello.
The club is looking forward to the annual Breakfast with Santa, a joint community service venture with the Western Pocono Lions Club.
The Lioness will next meet at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 20.
Offices closed
The church office, and the day care and preschool of Effort UMC will be closed Thursday and Friday due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
This past Saturday, the church's food pantry gave out over 60 food baskets to families in need.
No meeting
The West End Rotary Club will not meet this week due to the Thanksgiving holiday.
Thanksgiving Feast
Effort UMC will hold its annual Thanksgiving Feast beginning at 2 p.m. Thanksgiving Day. Registrations for the free dinner are limited at 100.

Thanksgiving Mass
Our Lady Queen of Peace, Gilbert, will hold a Thanksgiving Mass at 9 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
On Friday, Nov. 25, at 12:10 p.m. it is Mass only; no Eucharistic Adoration. The church office will be closed both days.
Monroe Seniors
The luncheon to be served at the Monroe Seniors meeting at Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville, for Nov. 30 is stuffed cabbage. Those planning to attend should call center manager Doris Philips at (570) 992-6988 a day or two in advance.
Financial aid
There will be a financial aid meeting for parents in the PHS cafeteria at 6 p.m. Nov. 30.
PVEN Board
The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network Board of Directors will meet at 9 a.m. Dec. 1 at Zion Lutheran Church, Brodheadsville.
CWU meeting
Church Women United of Monroe County invites all to its Christmas covered-dish meeting at noon, Saturday, Dec. 3, at Mt. Pocono United Methodist Church, on the corner of Church Avenue and Route 611.
Participants are asked to bring a dish to share, utensils and plates. The host church will provide beverages and cups.
Christmas stockings will be collected by Nora Cilurso that day or by prior arrangement.
Shirley Young will receive the fifth annual CWU Margaret Wyckoff Wells award for her dedication and work in the community.
Area churches are asked to volunteer to host any of the 2012 celebrations.
