Tamaqua gets basketball, swim wins

Tamaqua got wins from its boys' basketball team and girls' swim team in scholastic action on Monday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Minersville-Tamaqua

After struggling offensively in first half, Tamaqua erupted after intermission to post a 57-53 non-league win over Minersville.

The Raiders (2-0) trailed 20-13 at halftime, but Matt Kurek helped ignite the Tamaqua comeback. Kurek finished with a team-high 18 points. He got plenty of suport from teammates Jake Fegley and Brett Kosciolek, who added 10 points apiece.

Cole Weachock scored 23 points to lead the Miners.

In the JV contest, Zach Wargula's 14 points led Tamaqua to a 43-37 win.

Weatherly-MMI Prep

Weatherly saw its chance for a victory disappear under a 28-point fourth quarter explosion by Freeland MMI.

Trailing by six heading into the final period, the Preppers rallied for a 55-47 non-league victory.

George Gera scored 17 points for the winners.

Luke Reiner had 17 points and Scott Cole added 16 for Weatherly. Samson Walton and Joe Haganey both pulled in eight rebounds for the Wreckers.

MMI won the JV game, 40-35. Tyler Sipler's 14 points and Charlie Wallish's 10 led the junior Wreckers.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Jim Thorpe-Schuylkill Haven

Celeste Robinson scored 32 points to lead Jim Thorpe to a season-opening 63-47 non-league victory over Schuylkill Haven.

Chelsea Smelas added 19 points for the Olympians, who jumped out to a double digit first quarter lead and never looked back.

SWIMMING

Allentown Central Catholic-Tamaqua

The Blue Raiders faced off against Allentown Central Catholic in the pool and the Lady Raiders came out on top with a 124-43 win over the Vikettes, while the boys dropped their decision, 101-51.

Individually for the locals, Caroline Kanaskie, Miranda Amey and Joann Butkus all picked up two individual firsts, while Emily Bumbulsky and Megan Wagner earned first in one individual event.
