N'western grabs soccer victory

Northwestern opened up the spring season with a soccer win over Central Catholic in scholastic action on Friday.

GIRLS SOCCER

N'western-Cent. Catholic

Katie Hughes scored the lone goal of the game in the second half to lift the Tigers to a 1-0 win over the Vikettes.

Emily Iobst was credited with the assist for Northwestern (1-0).

The Tigers outshot the Vikettes 11-8 as Northwestern goalie Kelly Boyd made three saves. Leah Faust had six saves for Central (0-1).

Lehighton Salisbury

The Falcons scored a pair of goals in each half en route to a 4-1 win over the Lady Indians (0-1).

Emily Kotch scored three times to complete the hat trick for Salisbury, while Marisa Strunk added the other. Kori hadinger had two assists, while Kotch and Strunk each added one.

Amanda Acabou scored the lone goal for Lehighton.

Salisbury outshot Lehighton 18-8. Lauren Fischer had seven saves for the Falcons, while Kayla Troutman had 13 saves for the Indians.

BOYS TENNIS

ES North-Lehighton

The Indians mustered just a win by Nick Mantz in singles competition and dropped a 6-1 decision to the Timberwolves (2-0).

Mantz defeated Brendan DeSilva 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 as the Indians fell to 0-2 on the season.

Mike Aquino/Drew Niter (ESN) def. Chris Windbeck/Justin Ziegenfus 8-6; Joe Leone and Sean Leon (ESN) def. Deb Lobien and Jess Lobien 6-1, 6-2; Mike Kaufman and Brennen Stevens (ESN) def. Kirk Arner and Stephanie Slaw 10-7; Kris Penunia and Gilbert Josten (ESN) def. Peter Phalen and Gram Strauss 6-0, 6-0.

Pleasant Vy.-Liberty

The Hurricanes picked up a pair of wins in singles and another pair in doubles for a 4-3 non-league win over the Bears.

Vino Voulo picked up a win in singles for the Bears, while Lou Bravo and Kyle Tamaraz won at No. 1 doubles and Bryan Baumgartner and Jonathan Walmach won at No. 3 doubles.
