Dear Editor,
My family thinks "house is too quiet,"
And also thinks "mom needs a pet"
I told them no more pets in this house
No matter how quiet it gets.
"Don't dare bring a cat, dog, nor bird here
I know you've been taking a poll
To decide what you think would work out here.
And, above all, NO fish in a bowl."
I knew I could visit a shelter
If I needed to pet someone's pet
Someone who took home a cute puppy
Not thinking 'bout how big he'd get.
It's not very far to the shelter
And I drove almost up to the door
Then what did I see when it opened
But fat puppies all over the floor.
There were visitors "oohing and aahing"
Some siting and some on their knees
Some petting and cooing and calling
For one to come closer to squeeze.
I quietly stood in the background
Watching the scene from my stand
When I noticed the small mommy dog there
Circling and kissing each hand.
Does she think, "My puppies are sweethearts
I know they are cute as can be
But please is there any of you here
Who might have a place for me?"
Well the puppies went off with new owners
Those of adoptable age
While mommy dog turned around slowly
And sadly walked back to her cage.
My time came to leave from the shelter
So I did, RESOLUTIONS INTACT.
You know, I just came for a visit
And that's been a widely known fact.
Oh yes, sweet puppies are tempting
And, yes, they're as cute as can be
But there are no puppies in my house
Nope, now there's just "mommy" and me.
