Tamaqua picks up basketball wins

Tamaqua picked up victories in boys and girls basketball to highlight Thursday's scholastic sports action.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Tamaqua-North Schuylkill

Three players hit double figures as Tamaqua escaped with a 50-47 Schuylkill League Division I win at North Schuylkill.

The win snapped an eight-game losing streak against North Schuylkill dating back to 2005 for the Raiders (4-9 overall, 1-5 league).

Mike Streisel led a trio of Blue Raider double digit scorers with a 13-point performance. Spencer Bennett and Jake Fegley followed with 11 and 10 respectively.

Marian-Tri-Valley

A fourth-quarter rally fell just short as Marian dropped a 51-49 Schuylkill League game to Tri-Valley.

The Colts, who played without leading scorer Chris Barletta, got a huge game from Ryan Gimbi, who had game-high totals of 20 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. Teammate Dominic Richards added 10 points.

Marian falls to 11-4 overall and 5-2 in the league. Tri-Valley improves to 10-1 overall and 6-1 in league play.

Marian took the JV game, 54-41. Eric Swankoski had 17 points and Alden Whah chipped in 12 for the Colts.

Saucon Vy.-Northwestern

Saucon Valley opened the flood gates early and never looked back on its way to a 70-30 Colonial League victory over Northwestern.

The Tigers' Andrew Rivera finished with a team-high 13 points.

Weatherly-Minersville

Minersville used a big third quarter to run away with a 57-28 Schuylkill League victory over visiting Weatherly.

The Wreckers' Kyle Harris netted a team-high seven points.

Weatherly slips to 2-13 overall and 0-8 in the league.

In the JV game, Minersville scored a 29-24 win. Joe Haganay led the Wreckers with seven points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Moravian Acad.-Tamaqua

Despite playing without leading scorer Amy Zehner, who sat out with a foot injury, Tamaqua remained undefeated with a 63-46 non-league victory over visiting Moravian Academy.

The Lady Raiders (13-0) rallied from a 10 point first quarter deficit, outscoring the Lions 39-14 in the middle periods.

Allie Updike (23 points, 13 rebounds) and Kayla Hope (10 points, 10 rebounds) each had double-doubles for the Raiders. Cassie Eroh finished with 15 points and nine rebounds.

Tamaqua won the JV game 35-9 behind 14 points from Amanda Solt.

A 23-point fourth quarter helped Northwestern pull away from Saucon Valley for a 57-44 Colonial League victory.

Sara Jones paced the Tigers (5-8; 4-5) with 17-points. Kaleen Suter hit double figures with 13 points.

Wilson-Palmerton

Palmerton won the last four bouts to post a 39-27 Colonial League victory over Wilson.

The win was the fourth straight for the Bombers, who improved to 6-2 in league play.

Trailing 27-21, Andrew Strauss started the Palmerton run with a 5-2 decision at 171, Jarrett Kleintop won by a 7-2 decision at 189, Kane Kralik won by forfeit at 215 and first-year wrestler Skyler Rosenberry sealed the win with a :53 fall at 285.

In the Junior High match, Northern Lehigh grabbed a 46-27 win over Pen Argyl.
