Rig crashes in Schuylkill

A tractor-trailer rig crashed early Wednesday, April 13, along Interstate 81 in West Mahanoy Township, Schuylkill County.

State police at Frackville said Francis Atiapo, 44, of Charlotte, N.C., was driving a 2005 Freightliner Century tractor with 1997 Wabash van trailer northbound about 12:45 a.m. when the rig went onto the right berm and struck a metal guide rail. The rig continued north through the guide rail for about 60 feet and came to final rest in a grassy area on the north side of an off ramp.

Atiapo was not injured. Damages were disabling to the tractor and minor to the trailer. Troopers said Atiapo will be cited.
