JROTC meeting

The parents of the JROTC will meet on Monday, May 16 at 6 p.m. in the JROTC classroom. All parents are invited.

JROTC Awards night

The Panther Valley High School's JROTC Awards Night will be held on Friday, May 13 at 7 p.m. at the PVHS.

All former JROTC members are invited to attend and bid farewell to 1stSGT Steve Caddy.

Summit Hill

Cell phone drive

The Summit Hill Lions Club is conducting a used/old cell phone drive in conjunction with the annual Earth Day observance. The club will collect the used phones, which will be recycled and sold, the purchase price will be used to benefit the Summit Hill Food Pantry.

As a convenience to donors, the Lions Club has set up cell phone depository boxes at the following locations: the Summit Hill branch of First Niagara Bank; Northeast Chemical and Supply Co., Lansford; Vermillion's Dental Clinic, Summit Hill; the Tamaqua Area Elementary School; and Hiles Brothers Plumbing & Heating.

Donors are asked to make sure the telephone service of the phone is inactivated before they are dropped off. Also, SIM cards and accessories are not necessary.

St. Paul Lutheran

The Rev. Robert Brueckner from Nescopeck will be the guest preacher at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Summit Hill, in Sunday, May 1. The service will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will be preceded by the Sunday school at 9 o'clock.

The WELCA of the church will meet on Monday, May 2, at noon in the church.

St. Paul's Church council will hold a meeting on Tuesday, May 10, at 7 p.m. in the church.

SHCIO to meet

The monthly meeting of the Summit Hill Community Improvement Organization will be held on Monday, May 1, beginning at 7 p.m. in the borough hall.

Debra Ranck, president, will be in charge of the session.

Food distribution

The Summit Hill Food Pantry distributes food to the needy in the community on a monthly basis. Distributions are usually made on the fourth Tuesday of each month.

The Summit Hill Lions Club members assist with the packaging and distributions of the food boxes.

Lansford

Divine Liturgy

A combined St. Katharine Drexel/St. Joseph Liturgy will be held on Sunday, May 1, in St. Katharine Drexel Catholic Church, Lansford.

The chaplet will be sung at 2:30 p.m., followed by a concelebrated Mass at 3 o'clock.

Nesquehoning

NCFC meeting

The members of the ladies auxiliary to the New Columbus Fire Company will meet on Tuesday, May 3 at 7 p.m. in the fire company. President Gerry McConnon will preside.

The hospitality committee will be Lucy Turrano and Nancy Canzoneri.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary meeting

The regular monthly meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary to Nesquehoning Memorial VFW Post 8008 was held April 12, at the Post Home with President Amanda Breiner presiding.

Information on the Department Convention, which will be held in Gettysburg June 22-25, was received.

The annual JROTC Awards ceremony will be held at Panther Valley High School on May 13. Two cadets will receive awards from the auxiliary.

The auxiliary and post will be at Redner's the weekend of May 13-15 with Buddy Poppies. The sign up sheet for Poppy Queen and King is at the Post Home. Children and grandchildren of members, ages 4-12, may sign up.

A Miller Bloodmobile collection will be held on April 27.

The annual Loyalty Day Program will be held at 6 p.m. on Sunday, May 1.

The public is invited to attend this function and help acknowledge the following awards: regular member, veteran social, social member, auxiliary member, business member, special awards, youth award, and Voice of Democracy, and emergency personnel. Refreshments will follow.

Auxiliary members are requested to bring a dessert item.

The public is invited to attend the program and stay for the social.

Donations were made to department President Bonnie Drake's "Love Gift" and the VFW National Home to defray its grocery bill.

Nomination and election of officers for 2011-12 was held.

The next regular meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 10 at the Post Home. A social will follow the meeting. Contact Maureen at (570) 669-9578 for details.

Coaldale

Free class

A free Zumba fitness class will be held from 7-8 p.m. on Wednesday, May 4 at the Coaldale Complex, 150 W. Phillip St.
