Tigers, Fillies extend streaks
The Northwestern baseball and Marian softball teams extended their winning streaks with victories on Wednesday.
BASEBALL
No. Lehigh-Palmerton
Northern Lehigh finished with the best record in the Colonial League by rolling past rival Palmerton, 14-2.
The Bulldogs (16-3) banged out 16 hits, including four from Matt Gill, to finish CL play with a 14-2 mark and the No. 1 seed in the upcoming league tournament.
Jake Kern, who tossed four innings to earn his seventh win of the season, had three hits, scored two runs and also knocked in two. Eric Snyder added two hits, two runs and an RBI while Gill also crossed home twice.
For the Bombers (3-14; 3-13), Aaron Cook had two hits, including a home run, while Christian Marcin also had two safeties.

Northwestern gained its fifth straight win, holding off a late Catasauqua rally for an 8-6 Colonial League victory.
Sawyer Smith had two hits and knocked in four runs for the Tigers (11-8; 9-7) while Andrew Rivera added a pair of hits and RBI.
Rich Perry earned the mound win, striking out five batters, while Payton Bachman chipped in with a triple and a single.

Pleasant Valley-PM East
Xavier Hammond went the distance on the mound, striking out 12 batters, to help Pleasant Valley post a 5-4 Mountain Valley Conference win over Pocono Mountain East.
The Bears (10-6; 8-2) watched a three-run lead disappear only to push across the game-winning run in the top of the seventh inning.
Chris Kershner had three hits and an RBI for the winners, while Derrik Walling added a single, double and a run scored. Hammond allowed just five hits and walked only one.

PM West-Lehighton
Lehighton dropped its third straight game as Joel Soler tossed a six-hit shutout to lead Pocono Mountain West to a 6-0 Mountain Valley Conference victory.
Soler, who also collected three hits at the plate and scored two runs, struck out nine batters as the Indians (12-6; 7-4) were blanked for just the second time this season.
The Panthers (4-15; 2-9) also received three hits and an RBI from Greg Soler while James Iverson knocked in a pair of runs.
For Lehighton, Steven Shanton finished 3-for-3.

MMI Prep-Weatherly
William Lech hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to help Weatherly gain a 4-3 victory over MMI in the second game of a doubleheader to gain a split.
James Belletiere, who had a rare three-pitch inning in the fourth, allowed just two hits and no walks while striking out five to gain the pitching win for the Wreckers.
Brett Stallone had two hits and scored twice while Cody Hoffman added two hits and a pair of RBI.
In the first game, Charlie Karchner had three hits and scored twice as the Preppers posted a 7-2 victory.
Stallone had a hit and knocked in both Wrecker runs.

Matt Tucker had three of Panther Valley's 15 hits as the Panthers cruised to a 13-3 non-league win over Nativity.
Nick McArdle finished with two hits and three runs for the winners, while Brandon Gurka added a pair of hits and two runs scored. PV (7-11) also received a pair of hits and an RBI from Dave Marouchoc.

Panther Valley outlasted Marian, 17-11, in a non-league game on Tuesday.
The Panthers combined 13 hits and 14 walks to post the victory.
Brandon Gurka had three hits for Panther Valley. Dave Marouchoc, Matt Tucker and Steve Gulla all added two hits. Marouchoc also drove in four runs while Tucker and Gulla had three RBIs each. One of Gulla's hits was a home run.
For Marian (10-6), Justin Petrovich and Scott Morris both had three hits with Petrovich driving in three runs. Also having big games were Corey Ryba (double, home run, four RBIs); JT Keer (single, home run, two RBIs); and Brandon Dopira (two hits).

Palmerton won for the fifth time in six games by shutting out rival Northern Lehigh, 6-0, in Colonial League action.
Martina Herring allowed just two hits and struck out 11 to help the Blue Bombers close out league play with a 5-11 record.
Sara Lucykanish had three hits and scored twice for the winners, while Herring and Katie Reimer each added a pair of hits.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 11-8 overall and 9-7 in the league.

A huge day at the plate by Krysten Breiner helped Lehighton register an 11-6 Mountain Valley Conference win over Pocono Mountain West.
Breiner ripped a grand slam in the second inning and followed that with a three-run homer in the fourth frame.
Julianna Evans scattered eight hits to gain the pitching win as the Indians improved to 6-11 overall and 3-9 in the MVC.
For the Panthers (1-12; 0-11), Peake had a double and a triple.
