Fillies and Bears stay unbeaten in girls volleyball league competition
Marian and Pleasant Valley stayed unbeaten in league competition ingirls volleyball action on Tuesday.
VOLLEYBALL
Marian-Tri-Valley
In a battle of Schuylkill League Division leaders, Marian dominated Tri-Valey and rolled to a 25-14, 25-13, 25-7 victory.
The Fillies, who lead Division 4 with a 7-0 record, got another outstanding performance by sophomore middle hitter Marykate Sherkness. Sherkness, who already has 200 kills this season, had 16 more against Division 3 leading Tri-Valley. She also added nine digs.
Other Marian players who played well were Rachel Krajcirik (23 assists, seven digs); Taylor Mele (seven digs, five kills, two aces)Nikki Collevechio (16 service points, two aces, two digs); Katie Collevechio (13 service points, five aces, four digs); Tori Vadyak (five kills); Kathleen Reilly (three kills, two blocks); Laura Cinicola (three blocks, two kills); and Cathleen Cataldo (11 digs).
Marian won the JV match, 2-0.
Stroudsburg
-Pleasant Vy.
Pleasant Valley remained undefeated in the Mountain Valley Conference by sweeping Stroudsburg 25-17, 25-13, 25-20.
Beanna Joseph led the Bears at the net with 10 kills and three blocks. Also playing well for PV were Kayla Dorney (six kills, seven digs, two aces); Brittni Cumberland (13 assists); Kaitlin Raseley (six kills); MacKenzie Dorney (nine digs); Andrea Giardina (five digs, three aces); and Emily Shafer (three assists).
The Bears are now 6-0 in MVC play.
Tamaqua-Halifax
Tamaqua swept Halifax, 25-21,25-17,25-23, in a Schuylkill League match.
Sarah Lesisko had a big night at the service line for the Raiders with 15 points and six aces.
Also contributing to the Tamaqua victory were Paige Baddick (11 assists, four service points); Stacey Wallace: (seven service points, three aces, three kills, two blocks) and Sarah Paluck (five kills, two service points)
Halifax won the JV match 2-0.
Weatherly-Minersville
Weatherly swept Minersville, 25-18, 25-9, 25-21 behind a strong performance from Brittany Hinkle.
Hinkle had 12 kills, 18 digs and two blocks to lead the Wreckers (7-3, 3-3) to the Schuylkill League win.
Also playing well for Weatherly were Sarah Dolinsky (12 digs, seven kills, three blocks); Rachel Heister (21 assists, four digs); Alyssa Kephart (seven digs, five aces, four kills, three assists), Samantha Strizak (12 digs, three aces); and Alicia Panzarella (nine digs, two assists).
Weatherly won the JV match, 25-22, 25-15.
Blue Mt.-Panther Vy.
Panther Valley pushed Blue Mountain to the limit in its first two games of their Schuylkill League match, but ended up being swept, 25-23, 25-22, 25-16.
Chrissy Micholik led the Panthers at the net with 10 kills. Amy Yusella and Steph Kachelries added seven kills apiece while Deanna Focht added three. Lyndsay Kusko had a solid all-around game with six service points and 12 digs. Sarah Branchide (eight points) and Celene Yelito (seven points) led the way at the service line while Kristyn Gates had a strong defensive effort with nine digs.
Blue Mountain won the JV match, 25-16, 25-17.

The Cardinals rolled to a win over the Olympians in three games by scores of 8-25, 14-25, 23-25.
Pine Grove also won the JV game 12-25, 25-17, 24-26.

Jim Thorpe dominated both singles and doubles play to breeze to a 6-1 non-league win over Pottsville.
The Olympians (5-10) won four of the five singles matches as Ellen Tomko, Anna Domingo, Marissa Farra and Kasey Herman all posted sweeps.
The Jim Thorpe doubles teams of Katie Jones/Kearsen Meckes and Sabrina Catalano/Jackie Jackowski also rolled to easy pro set wins.
