Tamaqua girls soccer team routs JT

Tamaqua posted victories in girls soccer, tennis and golf to highlight Wednesday scholastic sports action.

GIRLS SOCCER

Jim Thorpe-Tamaqua

Tamaqua (4-0, 1-0) remained perfect on the young season with a 7-0 win over Schuylkill League foe Jim Thorpe.

The Raiders' Ali Updike scored two first-half goals with teammates Kayla Hope and Lauren Mateyak each adding one for a 4-0 halftime lead. Hope also had three assists.

Mateyak added another in the second half to along with goals from Kailee Rottet and Rachel Confer.

Tamaqua goalie Chey Bates made nine saves in net for her first shutout of the season.

Weatherly-Tri-Valley

Kristy Wise scored a pair of goals to lead Tri-Valley to an easy 7-0 Schuylkill League victory over Weatherly.

The Bulldogs had a 22-1 advantage in shots. Weatherly goalie Tracy Galada made 15 saves.

BOYS SOCCER

PM East-Lehighton

Andrew Ficco's goal with 8:24 left in overtime lifted Pocono Mountain East to a 3-2 Mountain Valley Conference win over Lehighton.

The Indians' Jason Addy scored the game's first goal with 4:13 left in the first half. Teammate Anthony Rossino later tallied a second half goal with 12:46 left in the game, which was enough to send the game into an extra frame. Addy was credited with the assist.

Ficco also scored the Cardinals' first goal, while Matt Schenke followed with another in the first half.

Shane Fordyce finished with 14 saves for Lehighton.

ES North-Pleasant Valley

Three first half goals helped Pleasant Valley secure a 4-1 Mountain Valley Conference victory over East Stroudsburg North.

Jack Wathen, Malik Krcic and Aaron Cetnar all recorded goals for the Bears in the opening half, while Ricky Forte finished things off with one in the second half.

Jarrel Bobb tallied the Timberwolves' lone goal.

Pleasant Valley moves to 3-0 (1-0 MVC) on the season, while ES North drops to 1-1 overall (0-1 MVC).

FIELD HOCKEY

PM East-Lehighton

Lehighton erupted for five second goals to run away with a 6-1 Mountain Valley Conference win over Pocono Mountain East.

Jordyn Homyak notched the Indians' lone goal in the opening half and then recorded two assists during the second half barrage.

Sarah Keer and Echo Bretz sparked the Indians' second half offense with two goals apiece. Kaycie Andrew also scored.

The Indians' Courtney Berger had two assists.

Lehighton improves to 1-1 overall and 1-0 in the MVC, while PM East slips to 1-2 overall (1-2 MVC).

ES North-Pleasant Valley

Pleasant Valley blanked Mountain Valley Conference for East Stroudsburg North, 2-0.

Felicia Dominici and Maggie Patterson recorded the two goals for the Bears (2-1).

Northern Lehigh-Bangor

In a Colonial League match between North Division rivals, it was Bangor that came out on top with a 2-1 win over Northern Lehigh.

Grace Horn and Olivia Fleischer provided the necessary scoring for the Slaters.

Rachel Wagner recorded the Bulldog's lone goal off a set-up from Kelsey Follweiler.

Bulldogs' keeper Nicole Horn finished with 19 saves. The Slaters' Rachel Hosterman had three saves.

Pen Argyl-Northwestern

Northwestern scored all five of its goals in the second half and went on to defeat Colonial League foe Pen Argyl, 5-1.

Jen Groller scored the first two goals for the Tigers. She was then followed in the scorebook by teammates Caileigh Landrigan, Ashley Pechacek and Paige Horner. Horner also had two assists.

Also picking up assists for the Tigers were Tiffany Gumina, Lauren Horner and Sara Jones.

Sam Rex made four saves in net for Northwestern.

Palmerton-Catasauqua

Catasauqua scored a goal in each half and went on to beat Palmerton, 2-0, in Colonial League action.

Nicole Tkach and Nicole Kern each scored for Catty.

Palmerton goal keeper Lydia Anthony made 11 saves in net.

GIRLS TENNIS

Jim Thorpe-Moravian Acad.

Jim Thorpe couldn't handle the play of reigning Colonial League champion Moravian Academy and ended up on the back end of a 7-0 setback.

Tara Jain, Catherine Raul and Monica Gupta swept singles' play for the Lions.

The Olympians' No. 1 doubles tandem of Carly Marzen and Salina Catalano gave their Lions' opponents their best shot and were able to steal four games in a proset match.

Jim Thorpe drops to 2-7 on the season.

Lauren Androkitis, Vanessa Wagner and Jordan Nowacki swept singles' play for the Blue Raiders.

Nowacki and Wagner also picked up a 8-2 proset victory in doubles' play.

Pottsville and Minersville defeated Weatherly on both the girls' and boys' side in their Schuylkill League cross country meet.

Andrew Vack had the highest finish for the Wreckers. He came in seventh on the boys' side with a time of 20:37.

Suzanne Reigle placed eighth on the girls' side. She came in with a time of 27:22.

Mahanoy Area-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe opened its Schuylkill League season with a sweep of Mahanoy Area.

The Lady Olympians recorded a 20-38 win over the Golden Bears while the Olympians scored a 23-38 victory on the boys' side.

Kayla Susko led the Lady Olympians with a first place finish in a time of 22:44. Teammates Erin Bucci and Catherine Condly finished second and third.

Josh Williams paced the boys with a second place finish. Zach Nace crossed the finish line in third.

At par-70 Villas Crossing, Tamaqua walked off the course with a 334-344 non-league victory over Lehighton.

The Blue Raiders' Steve Christ carded medalist honors with a 77.

The Indians were led by Cole Rex, who fired a team-low 81.

Stroudsburg-Pleasant Vy.

Stroudsburg remained unbeaten in the Mountain Valley Conference by handing Pleasant Valley a 15 1/2-2 1/2 setback at Indian Mountain.

The Mounties' Yani Korovesis shot a one-over-par 72 to grab medalist honors.

Andrew Hansen carded a Bears' low of 77 on the day while Alex Kaye was right behind with a 78.

The Bears' Colin Cook accounted for most of his team's points as he finished in a 1 1/2-1 1/2 tie with the Mounties' Eric Balcik.

Pleasant Valley drops to 4-4 overall and 4-2 in the MVC. Stroudsburg improved to 6-0.
