Jonas Bake Oven debuts at fair
The Polk Township Historical Society will introduce the Jonas Bake Oven to the public at the West End Fair. Built around 1790, the Bake Oven was moved from the Hotel Jonas to the fairgrounds in mid-March 2010. It is now housed just outside the West End Fair Museum near the main stage area. Members of the historical society will be on hand with information and to answer questions. Stop by and help them welcome this invaluable piece of history to its new home. For additional information, call Pat at (610) 681-8984.
Church needs help
Salem St. Paul's Lutheran Church is looking for volunteers to work its West End Fair. Volunteers must be 13 years old or older. If you are able to sign up for more than one shift, that would be great.
Volunteers will receive a free fair entry ticket for the day they are scheduled to work, plus a free meal. There are three shifts daily from Aug. 22 through Aug. 28 with at least five-six volunteers per shift. It is helpful to have a man on each shift to help with lifting the filling pans. Captains are needed to oversee operation of the morning, afternoon and evening shifts. The captain would man the stove heating the filling and barbecue, making gravy, etc., as needed. The captain would also supervise closing down the stand at night. A job description is available for captains. Contact Pat Held for questions regarding the work schedule at (610) 767-5641.
Happy Anniversary
Celebrating their 45th anniversary on Aug. 21 are James and Linda Van Horn. Celebrating their 62nd anniversary on Aug. 28 are the Rev. Bruce and Vi Opsahl.
