VFW Ladies Auxiliary picnic meeting

The annual VFW Auxiliary Picnic Meeting was held on Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Lake Hauto. President Mandy Breiner presided at the meeting and hosted the picnic. Twelve members were in attendance.

General Orders #1 were received. The Fall Conference will be held Sept. 9-12. The District 20 meeting will be held on Sunday, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m., hosted by Stroudsburg Post and auxiliary. Sixty-six cards were sent by members present and 20 hours were reported under Veterans Assistance. A donation was made to VFW - PAC.

Dues are now being collected for 2010-2011. Candle sheets were available; returns are due by the Oct. 12 meeting.

A delicious meal was enjoyed by the members. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 6:30 p.m. at the Post Home.

Food pantry

The Nesquehoning Food Pantry will be open for the distribution of food on Thursday, Aug. 19, from 1-3:30 p.m. In the Meed's United Methodist Church on West Catawissa Street.

Free dinner

The free community dinner will be served on Wednesday, Aug. 25 from 5-7 p.m. In the Meed's United Methodist Church. All are welcome.

Senior boxes

Senior boxes will be distributed on Friday, Aug. 27at the Meeds United Methodist Church.

75th anniversary

committee to meet

A meeting of the 75th. Diamond Anniversary Committee of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, will be held Thursday, Aug. 19 at 6:30 p.m. in the church hall.

The church, at 9 W. Railroad St., will be celebrating its 75th anniversary on Sunday, Sept. 19.

Lansford

Wednesday service

At 7 p.m. each Wednesday St. John's Lutheran Church, 1 E. Abbott St., Lansford, holds an informal worship: a spiritual, peaceful evening service with Holy Communion. All are welcome to this relaxed, brief evening prayer. For those who wish to come early, a simple supper is served at 6 p.m., followed by a brief Bible study at 6:30 p.m. For more information, call the Rev. Marjorie Keiter, (570) 645-0356.

Borough meetings

The schedule of upcoming meeting for Lansford Borough Council's committees is as follows:

Parks, Recreation and Lighting Committee, Thursday, Aug. 26, at 6:30 p.m.

Community Development, Planning, Zoning and Ordinance Committee, Thursday, Aug. 26, at 7:15 p.m.

Public Safety Committee, Monday, Aug. 30, at 6:30 p.m.

Public Works Committee, Monday, Aug. 30, at 7:30 p.m.

Municipal Administration and Finance Committee, Tuesday, Aug. 31, at 6 p.m. in the borough office.

All of the meetings will be held at the Lansford Community Center, unless otherwise noted.

Democrats to meet

The Lansford Democratic Club will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 19, at the Lansford Legion.

Summit Hill

Historical society

The monthly meeting of the Summit Hill Historical Society will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m. in the society's museum on east Ludlow Street. Vice president Harry Miller will conduct the session.

The agenda will include a discussion on participation in the annual Heritage Festival at Mauch Chunk Lake Park on Sept. 18; a wedding display for the museum's window; books for the festival and holidays; discussion on the current building being for sale; and the statue/urn in center of park.

The heritage center grand opening scheduled for Oct. 2 will also be discussed.

Water authority

The monthly meeting of the Summit Hill Water Authority will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. in the borough building. John Michalik, president, will be in charge of the session.

Scripture sharing

The weekly scripture sharing session of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Summit Hill, will be held on Thursday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. in the rectory.

Volunteers needed

Volunteers are needed to help with the cleanup and preparatory work associated with the upcoming grand opening of the Summit Hill Heritage Center.

The center is located at the former St. Paul United Church of Christ, Hazard and Chestnut streets.

Organizer Debra Ranck is proposing workday sessions for every Saturday morning in August.
