Senior news

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met last week with 74 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided readings.

Eleanor Roberts offered the invocation, entitled "The Providing." Reports were provided by secretary Eleanor Schmerfeld and Vice President Doris Brobst. Tom Dally was added to the sick list. A thank you card was received from Jean Behr.

The annual picnic was held Aug. 12 at the West Penn Rod and Gun Club with 68 members in attendance. Christy Joy catered the lunch meal.

Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join the senior's group.

The next meeting will be held Aug. 26, at 1 p.m., at the Tamaqua Community Center. A Health Fair is being planned for Sept. 16 at the Hometown Nursing Center.

YMCA classes

The YMCA Jack 'N Jill Preschool is accepting registrations for the 4- and 5-year-old preschool classes. School is scheduled to begin on Sept. 7

The Y is also accepting registrations for the fall swim lesson sessions. Swim lessons will begin on Sept. 13.

SAL programs

The Tamaqua Salvation Army has a number of programs and activities scheduled over the next few weeks, including several weekly programs.

Continuing programs include: Coffee Cafe, Mondays, 10 a.m. to noon; Needlebug Sewing and Quilting Club, Mondays, 10 a.m. to noon; Older and Bolder, Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to noon.

AARP Driver's Training classes will be held Sept. 23 and Sept. 24, from 2-4 p.m.

Worship services are held Sundays at 11 a.m., with Sunday school classes at 10 a.m. Men's and Women's ministries meet Tuesdays at 6 p.m.

Legion Riders

The Lansford American Legion Riders group is sponsoring a free bus trip to Washington, D.C. for local veterans on Sept. 11. Participation is open to Tamaqua and Coaldale veterans.

Seating is limited, so first come, first served. A small security deposit is required, but will be returned the day of the trip.

TOPS

The local chapter of Take Off Pounds Sensibly (TOPS) meets every Wednesday in the education room of St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital, Coaldale. Weigh ins are held at 6:30 p.m., followed by a short business session and a program. TOPS is a weight loss support group for men and women of all ages. Members learn about sensible nutrition, portion control and lifestyle changes designed to improve quality of life and promote lifelong health.
