Sorority news
The Preceptor Alpha Upsilon Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority held a beginning Day Celebration on Aug. 25 at the Lake Hauto Third Beach. Marie Umbriac served as hostess, preparing entree selections.
Members brought appetizers and/or desserts. Recipes were collected and will be compiled into a commemorative brochure. Guests included family members, former chapter member Pam Stump, prospective member Pat Kibbler and Diane Agosti of the Tamaqua Master's chapter.
Participants received a bracelet set and votive holder with citronella tea light as favors.
Following dinner, members participated in games focusing on team building skills.
Hoagie orders are being accepted, with a delivery date of Sept. 23.
Proceeds will benefit the chapter's community service projects, including a Sept. 11 party for the residents of the Geriatric Center at St. Luke's Miners Memorial Hospital in Coaldale.
The next regular meeting of the chapter will be held Sept. 8, at 7 p.m., at Cabela's in Hamburg. Cathy Santee will serve as hostess and the evening will include a scavenger hunt.
Members wishing to car pool will meet at Leiby's lot at 6:30 p.m.
Bethany EC
The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Nursery care is provided. Sunday school for all ages is held at 9:30 a.m.
Also on Sunday, a worship service will be held at the Tamaqua ABC High Rise, at 6 p.m.
Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, prayer time at 8:30 a.m.; Wednesday, Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m., Prayer and Bible study at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, Quilters meets at 10:30 a.m.; Saturday, musician rehearsal at 9 a.m., praise practice at 9:30 a.m.
A Men's Fraternity will begin Sept. 14 and will thn continue meeting on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m.
Designed to help men understand their roles, the group is Biblically based and non-denominational.

Recovery help
"Celebrate Recovery" sessions are held every Friday, 7-9 p.m., at New Life Assembly of God Church, 407 Schuylkill Ave. Anyone who needs help recovering is welcome to attend.

St. Peter's Union
The Rev. Rodney Wells will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. The service will include the celebration of Holy Communion.
A Sundae Sunday fellowship will be held following the service. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.
Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, sinner theater rehearsal at 6:15 p.m., Sunday school teachers and officers meeting at 7 p.m.; Retirees meeting at 10 a.m.; Thursday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m.
Choir rehearsals are held on Thursdays. Next week's schedule will include: Junior Choir at 7 p.m.; and Senior Choir at 7:45 p.m.
Calvary UM
Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church continues holding its services and events at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle, 614 Valley Rd., through the Labor Day weekend.
The annual Lewistown Valley Camp meeting is underway. Daily services will be held at 7 p.m. through Sept. 4.
On Sept. 5, the morning service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wehry Family performances at 2:30 and 6 p.m.
On Labor Day, a worship service will be held at10:30 a.m. and a ministry with Larry More will be held at 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. Evangelist, song leader and special singers will be the Leckrones of Kurtz, Indiana.
