Senior news

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met last week with 72 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided readings. One new member, Mae McKeever, was welcomed.

Eleanor Roberts offered the invocation, entitled "Someone There." Reports were provided by secretary Eleanor Schmerfeld and vice president Doris Brobst. Cards were received from Jean Machamer and the family of Tom Dally. The membership total has reached 117.

Officers for 2011 were elected and will be installed the first meeting of January 2011. Officers will be: Jean Machamer, president; Doris Brobst, vice president; Joanne Herring, secretary; Dolores Walck, treasurer. August and September birthdays will be celebrated at the Sept. 30 meeting.

Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join the senior's group.

Bloodmobile

An American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be held Sept. 22, from 1 to 6 p.m., in the social hall of St. John United Church of Christ. The church is located at the intersection of Pine and Biddle Streets in Tamaqua.

Anyone 17 or older, who weighs at least 110 pounds and is in generally good health is eligible to donate.

This visit is being sponsored by the Alpha Theta Masters Sorority.

Elementary band

Tamaqua Raider Band director Mark Beltz has announced that Instrument Rental Night, for fourth and fifth grade Tamaqua Area School District students, will be held Sept. 21, beginning at 7 p.m. Rental night will begin at 7 p.m. and be held in the school district auditorium, located between the high and middle schools.

St. Peter's Union

The Rev. Rodney Wells will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. The special service will include the dedication of this year's Confirmation class. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, practice for the Sunday school Christmas program will be held at 10:30 a.m. and the church board will meet at 10:45 a.m.

Activities for next week will include: Wednesday, dinner theater rehearsal at 6:15 p.m.; Thursday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m. and Confirmation class meets at 6 p.m.

Choir rehearsals are held on Thursdays. Next week's schedule will include: Cherubs at 6:30 p.m., Junior Choir at 7 p.m., and Senior Choir at 7:45 p.m.

Calvary UM

The Rev. Brian Reading will officiate at this Sunday's 10:25 a.m. worship service in Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church. Sunday school classes meet at 9:15 a.m. Church activities return to the church facilities this Sunday instead of at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle.

Also on Sunday, an evening of praise, worship and Bible study will begin at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday prayer and praise services are held at 7 p.m.
