The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met last week with 89 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session and provided readings. Two guests, Jean Kistler and Lucy Breuning, were welcomed.
Eleanor Roberts offered the invocation, entitled "Friendship." Reports were provided by secretary Eleanor Schmerfeld and treasurer Dolores Walck.
A moment of silence was observed in memory of Tom Dally and Frances Koch was added to the sick list. A discussion was held on the upcoming election of officers, which will be held during the next meeting. Birthday wishes were extended to Mary Draper, whose 96 birthday is Sept. 6.
Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join the senior's group.
The next meeting will be held Aug. 26, at 1 p.m., at the Tamaqua Community Center. A health fair is being planned for Sept. 16 at the Hometown Nursing Center.
SAL programs
The Tamaqua Salvation Army has a number of programs and activities scheduled over the next few weeks, including continuing programs such as: Coffee Cafe, Mondays, 10 a.m. to noon; Needlebug Sewing and Quilting Club, Mondays, 10 a.m. to noon; Older and Bolder, Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to noon.
AARP Driver's Training classes will be held Sept. 23 and Sept. 24, from 2-4 p.m. The class is designed for drivers age 50 or older and is class room instruction only.
Worship services are held Sundays at 11 a.m., with Sunday school classes at 10 a.m. Men's and Women's ministries meet Tuesdays at 6 p.m.

SS. Peter and Paul
The Holy Name Society of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church will meet this Thursday, at 8 p.m. The meeting will be preceded by a Mass, which will begin at 7:30 p.m.
Bethany EC
The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. worship service this Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Nursery care is provided. Sunday school for all ages is held at 9:30 a.m.
Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, prayer time at 8:30 a.m.; Wednesday, Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m., Prayer and Bible study at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, Quilters meet at 10:30 a.m.; Saturday, musician rehearsal at 9 a.m., praise practice at 9:30 a.m.
A Men's Fraternity will begin Sept. 14 and will continue meeting on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. Designed to help men understand their roles, the group is Biblically based and non-denominational. For more information, or to enroll, call (570) 668-2520.
St. John UCC
The Rev. Kevin Duffy Guy will officiate at the 9:30 a.m. service this Sunday in St. John United Church of Christ. Nursery care is available during the service. The service will be followed by a time of fellowship.
The weekly service is broadcast on radio station WLSH, AM1410, at 11:30 a.m. Sundays.
Also on Sunday, the Confirmation class will meet at 7 p.m.
