DUI, thefts, domestic violence in Mahoning
Mahoning Township Chief of Police Kenneth Barnes released a list of recent incidents investigated.
• Sarah Elizabeth Waydick, 22, of the 200 block of Keiser Lane, Lehighton, was cited for driving under the influences of alcohol and related offenses.
Police said on Oct 13 and about 2:39 a.m., Waydick was stopped between Fedor's Car Wash and Burger King on Route 443 after an officer allegedly spotted a vehicle being driven erratically.
Police said Waydick, the driver, exhibited signs of intoxication and failed field sobriety tests. She was taken into custody and transported to Blue Mountain Health Systems, Lehighton Campus and consented with the implied consent law. Blood was drawn and forwarded to a lab to determine exact BAC.
• In an update on wanterd person Trevor Scott Hunsicker, Barnes said the Carbon County District Attorney's Office approved an arrest warrant charging Hunsicker with the felony crime of flight to avoid apprehension or prosecution.
The charges stem from an incident on Rt. 209 (Mansion Hill area) on Nov. 10. The MTPD warrant is in addition to existing warrants from the Carbon County Sheriff's Office and others.
As stated in previous releases, anyone having information on his whereabouts is urged to call police or the Carbon County Communications Center. And anyone interfering with his apprehension could face criminal prosecution.
• George Edward Roberts IV, 21, of the 300 block of North Street, Jim Thorpe, was charged with retail theft.
Police allege that on Nov. 19, at about 12:47 p.m., Roberts attempting to steal $132.03 worth of merchandise.
• A report of the theft of auto parts is being investigated by police. Barnes said on Nov. 22 at 2:10 p.m, the owner of Leasers Garage 2141 Mahoning Drive West reported four catalytic converters valued at about $500 were stolen from the rear of the property. The thefts occurred within a two week period of reporting.
• Melissa J. Gressler, 38, of the 100 block of Creekside Manor Drive, and Amanda Lynn Messinger, 20, of the 200 block of South First Street, both of Lehighton, were charged by police with retail theft. Both were charge via citations for attempting to steal a package of women's underwear. The charges stem from their apprehension by loss prevention agents at Wal-Mart Supercenter on Nov. 21 at about 5:52 p.m.
• Barnes said on Nov. 23, a resident of Jamestown Drive reported to police that person(s) unknown stole two bags of DVD movies while the resident was out of the house between 5:55 and 6:20 p.m.
• On Nov. 24, at about 4:03 p.m., police were dispatched to the 800 block of Fredericks Grove Road for a report of a male juvenile firing a semi-automatic pistol in the rear of a property and then attempting to hide the weapon. Upon arrival, police located the Juvenile, who had a weapon in his pocket.
Barnes said the gun was determined to be a BB gun and not a handgun. The BB gun was a replica of a .45 semi-automatic pistol. It should be noted that the BB gun could very easily be mistaken to a real gun, especially at nighttime. The matter was handled between police, the juvenile and his father.
• Edwin Mertz, 51, of the 100 block of Mauch Chunk Street, Mahoning Township, was cited for disorderly conduct after he alleged had been laying on Route 209 with his pants down. Police said they were dispatched to the area of 131 Mauch Chunk Street (Rt. 209) for a report of a male laying in the street with his pants down. Prior to police arrival, a passing motorist told police he attempted to assist the male but the male kept falling over while attempting to walk.
• On Nov. 26 (Black Friday), police sere summoned to Wal-Mart Supercenter for a report of an intoxicated male outside of the building. The male was representing that he was some type of vendor and was going to give out sample packages of a product.
Police Officers confronted the male and he was requested to leave the property. He left with a female companion, who was not drinking.
• Police were summoned to Wal-Mart again on Nov. 26, this time at 11:05 a.m. for a report of an adult female riding a bike in the parking lot soliciting people for money. The female was gone upon the arrival of the responding Officer.
• Police were dispatched to a home in the Lower Nis Hollow Trailer Park on Nov. 26 at about 11:26 a.m. for a report of a violent domestic in progress and that a female was injured. Upon arrival the investigating officer was told by a female that a male had shoved her head into a refrigerator and she was bleeding from the lip.
The female victim on two occasions declined to have the responding officer arrest the male for domestic violence.
• Jamie Tyfarraega Boykin, 28, of the 300 block of Madison Street, Wilkes-Barre, was charged with felony retail theft and persistent disorderly conduct at Wal-Mart on Nov. 27.
Police allege that on Nov. 27, at about 2:03 p.m., Boykin was apprehended by lost prevention agents for retail theft, and that she was fighting those who had her in custody.
Police arrested Boykin and she was arraigned before District Judge Bruce Appleton in Palmerton, then remanded to Carbon County Prison in lieu of $3,000 cash bail.
• On Saturday, 11-27-10 at approx. 3:56pm, a resident in the 2000 block of Orioles Drive reported to Police that between 12:30pm and 3:56pm, person(s) unknown ran over their mailbox and post with a vehicle and fled the scene. Vehicle parts (parts of a left front fender) at the scene indicate that the fleeing vehicle was a silver Hyundai. Anyone having information or witnessing the incident is asked to call MTPD @ 570-386-2241.
• Also on Nov. 27, at about 7:55 p.m., police were dispatched to Wal-Mart where Loss Prevention informed the responding officer that a male was observed switching price tags on a men's jacket. The male fled the store prior to being apprehended. However, a description of a vehicle and the registration plate number on the vehicle used by the male to leave the area was supplied to police. A follow up investigation has identified the male and charges are pending in the incident.
• Stacy L. Behler, 24, of Gypsy Hill Apartments, Lehighton, was charged with retail theft and providing false information to police.
According to police, on Nov. 28 at about 1:53 p.m. in Rite Aid at the Carbon Plaza Mall, she allegedly opened a pack of condoms, removed one condom, and fled the store.
• On Nov. 28 at 10:02 p.m., police were dispatched to a residence in the 100 block of Center Street. The homeowner observed and then attempted to confront a male wearing a dark hooded sweatshirt rummaging through a car parked in the driveway.
The actor fled in a dark colored Jeep Liberty and was last seen heading towards Rt. 209. Anyone having information or witnessing the incident is asked to call MTPD at 570-386-2241.
• On Monday, Nov. 29, at about 11:57 a.m., police responded to Wal-Mart for a report of an adult female stealing a gift card.
Police said a mother and two small children under the ages of 6 were shopping in the store. One of the children was holding a gift card and dropped it on the floor.
According to police, a female standing nearby picked the card up and fled the store, but she left a bicycle behind. The female fled over an embankment, running through yards of homes along Route 443 and was last seen running across the old Wal-Mart lot towards Ashtown Road.
Mahoning Township and Lehighton borough police conducted a search for her but she was not located. As a result of a follow up investigation, it was learned that the female was staying at a nearby motel and she has been identified. Additionally, she is the same female involved in the Nov. 26 solicitation for money incident.
Charges will be filed against the female. Her name will be released when the charges are filed. Wal-Mart management gave the mother and her children a replacement gift card.
• Police said on Monday, Nov. 29, a female senior citizen resident of the 100 block of Beaver Run Road notified police that she received a phone call from an individual telling her that she won $2.5 million but in order to collect her winnings she had to send a Western Union check in the amount of $599 to an address in Bronx, NY to cover postage and handling fees.
The alert senior realized it was a scam and notified police.
