No. Lehigh gets hoop, mat victories

Panther Valley, Pleasant Valley, Jim Thorpe and Northern Lehigh all came up with boys basketball wins over the weekend.

In girls action, Northern Lehigh, Palmerton and Jim Thorpe picked up victories, while Northwestern and Northern Lehigh also won in wrestling.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Panther Vy.-Palmerton

After holding a slim two-point lead at halftime, the Panthers outscored the Bombers 38-16 and pulled away for a 62-38 non-lerague win.

Brock Mitchell led the Panthers with 14 points. Zach Stanko, Damian Lewis and Logan Stano all finished with 12 points as the Panthers clinched a post-season playoff berth.

Tyler Kravetz paced the Bombers with a team-high 10 points.

The Panthers rolled to a 62-29 win in the JV game as Cody Geist finished with 12, Bertt Snyder 11, Tyler Svetik 11 and Ben Andrews 11. Joe Revell led the Panthers with nine.

Parkland-Pleasant Vy.

Trailing by four entering the final quarter, Pleasant Valley rallied in the final eight minues to escape with a 49-48 non-conference win over visiting Parkland.

The Bears' Mike Sharpe netted seven of his 13 points in the final frame, while Nick Stanovick hit three free throws in the same stanza en route to a 13-point performance himself. Pat Kregeloh hit double figures with 11 in the victory.

The Trojans' Paul Pammer scored eight of his game-high 18 points in the fourth, while Nick Miller chipped in five of his 13 in the final eight minutes. Rob Dvoracek just hit double digits with 10.

In the JV game, Parkland snuck away with a 54-52 in another nail-biter of a game.

Williams Vy.-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe took advantage of a prolific second half to post a 59-44 victory over visiting Williams Valley.

After taking a 25-24 lead into the lockerroom, the Olympians built themselves a much more comfortable lead by outscoring the Vikings 34-20 over the final two quarters.

Sam Lux paced the Olympians' offensive with an 18-point performance, while Corey Cinicola and Rashid Epps followed with 16 and 11 respectively.

Tyler Herb kept pace with Lux with 16 points to lead the Vikings, while Brent Wolfe finished with 15.

Northern Lehigh pulled out this close non-league match up with Blue Mountain recently with a 55-53 win.

Jordan Waylen led the locals with 17 points on the night, while teammates Nick Pappas added 13 and Evan Biegley scored twelve.

For Blue Mountain, their high scorers were Matt LaScala's 18 and Matt Maloney's 17.

In the JV contest, Blue Mountain pulled out the win with a 42-37 score.

Northern Lehigh raced out to a 12-0 lead after one quarter, only to see Blue Mountain battle back to within four late in the game, to produce the final score, 36-32.

The locals' Sonya Josephson had a game-high 18 points in the contest to lead the Bulldogs (16-0).

Meanwhile, Davies and Grapsy had 11 and 10 in the losing effort.

For PV, Dana McFadden had a game-high 11 points on the strength of three three-pointers.

The Lady Panthers won the JV contest 40-26 to prevent the sweep.

The Lady Olympians got big games from Celeste Robinson, Chelsea Smelas and Hilary Reis to lead their team to the 64-39 win over the Preppers.

Robinson and Smelas both notched 15 in the win, while Reis added 14 for the well-rounded team effort.

In the losing effort, Audrey McNelis had a game-high 20 points, while teammate Lainie Titus chipped in with 12.

After the two teams were tied at half, the Wreckers prevented a close game piling up a 21-point third quarter and continued straight into the fourth with a 17-point effort.

The Wreckers' Alexa Figas finished with a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds, while Nicole Calia chipped in with a double figures' 16 points.

Lauren Ellsworth paced the Lions with 11 points, while Brianna Smarkusky hit double figures with 10 points.

In the JV game, Weatherly came out on top for a 40-37 win over Lackawanna Trail. The Wreckers' Alicinia Panzarella finished with a team-high 10 points.

Emmaus used a 21-0 run during the second and third quarters to pull away from Northwestern and earn a 60-28 victory in non-league play on Sunday.

The Tigers went 11:22 without a field goal during one stretch and turned the ball over 21 times.

The Green Hornets (5-10) were paced by Christina Gilley, who scored 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Dee Brown added 12 points in the winning effort.

Jim Thorpe traveled to Fountain Hills to take part in a round-robin like North Schuylkill Spartan Invitational.

The Olympians' Brian Ohl (103) and Dillon Smith (145) traveled back home with tournament championships under their belts.

Ohl completed the event with a 2-0 record in a four-man field for his gold medal, while Smith was untouched at 5-0 finishing with two decisions, two major decisions and one pin for a win.

The Bulldogs matmen picked up a big win over Bangor, 66-12 and received plenty of individual wins to nab the victory.

Ty Herzog, Brandon Loch, Colin Hedash, Lucas Dise, Chris Christ, Dylan Hofmann, Kyle Greenawald, and Craemer Hedash all picked up pins in the win.

Springfield Tournament

Panther Valley placed third in the Springfield Township Round Robin Tournament.

All nine Panthers who participated in the tournament placed, led by champions Nick O'Donnell (103), Justin Christman (145) and Mike Weaver (160).

Brandon Gurka (119), Kevin Schaller (152) and Keith Cheadle (189) all placed second for the Panthers while Jared Eickhoff (125) and Devin Dillard (135) were third place finishers. Alex Lorkowski (171 ) placed fourth.

Upper Dublin won the team championship while Southern Hunterdown was second.
