PenTeleData honored for its support

It isn't easy to brighten the mood after sunset.

Through their sponsorship of last year's Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Light the Night Walk, PenTeleData helped play a pivotal role in the success the event experienced.

For their efforts, PenTeleData, which became a new partner with the LLS last year, was recently recognized with a plaque for their support of last year's Light The Night Walk.

PenTeleData sponsored the walk through both the employee Dress Down Day, as well as a banner advertising on their home page, according to Jaime Mendes, chief administrative officer, PenTeleData.

Mendez said the company was only too happy to be able to assist in such a worthwhile endeavor.

"We're just proud that we work for a company that allows its employees to get involved in the local community," Mendes said. "Especially a cause like this, that really helps children, and to hopefully find a cure."

In turn, the LLS was extremely grateful to PenTeleData for its sponsorship, according to Pamel Formica of the LLS.

"The Light The Night Walk is the Society's signature fundraising Walk that celebrates and commemorates lives touched by cancer," Formica said. "The annual Walk is truly unique as it is held in the evening with walkers carrying illuminated balloons, white for cancer survivors, red for supporters, and gold in memory of a loved one lost to cancer. "

Formica said PenTeleData has agreed to host a 2010 Dress Down Day for this year's event, and will again provide a banner to advertise for the upcoming Walk Season.

The 2010 Light The Night Walk will be held Saturday, Oct. 16, at Northampton Community College, Bethlehem. Activities will get under way at 4:30 pm, and the walk will commence at 6:30 pm.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Over 923,000 Americans are currently fighting a blood cancer. This year, an estimated 135,500 people will be diagnosed with a blood cancer. Of those, every 10 minutes a child or adult is expected to die from leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma. That is 143 people per day or nearly six people every hour who lose their battle. Leukemia alone will cause more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20.

Since 1949, the Society has invested over $550 million in cancer research and patient services, and $65 million in 2007 alone.
