Ribbon cut at senior center
Senior citizens in Jim Thorpe Borough, Penn Forest Township and Kidder Township now have a new senior center to enjoy, thanks to the efforts of the Carbon County Area Agency on Aging.
The organization cut the ribbon at a grand opening for the county's fifth senior center on Tuesday. Called the Jim Thorpe/Penn-Kidder Senior Center, the new facility is located in the Bear Creek Plaza on State Route 903 just north of Jim Thorpe.
The Carbon County Area Agency on Aging uses the centers to provide information, programs and services to older adults. Area residents over the age of 60 can call on the agency for transportation, legal assistance, benefit counseling, referrals, volunteer opportunities, ombudsman services and preadmission assessments.
The Jim Thorpe/Penn-Kidder Senior Center will provide hot meals and a place for seniors to gather.
About 100 seniors came out to enjoy live music, food and games during Tuesday's grand opening celebration.
All three County Commissioners made an appearance and assisted with the ribbon cutting.
