LALLC supports Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation

If Dolly Woody means what she says, the color "pink" will be only a color someday.

That is the message Woody, executive director of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Northeastern Pennsylvania Chapter, gave to members of the Lehighton Area Lioness Lions Club.

She was one of two special visitors at the February club meeting. Also attending was Betty McCall, wife of state Rep. Keith McCall.

Last fall, the club held its third annual Pink Light Walk, with Mrs. McCall, serving as honorary chairwoman. She and her daughter, Courtney, attended the event and Courtney presented each survivor with a pink pillow that she made herself.

The pillows evoked a myriad of emotions in the women who accepted their gift.

At the event, Mrs. McCall also donated a Breast Cancer Awareness Longaberger basket, which raised $700 through a raffle.

Members of the club voted to have the proceeds of that basket raffle donated to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation and since Mrs. McCall provided the basket, she was invited to present the check of $700 to the local chapter.

Accepting the check was Woody, who spoke about breast cancer awareness and on the new name of the organization. She said it was formerly known as The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. She said that since its inception in 1982, Komen has raised over $1.5 billion for research, education and health services, making it the largest breast cancer charity in the world.

Woody said that the Komen organization is recognized as the leading catalyst in the fight against breast cancer, with more than 100,000 volunteers working in a network of 125 U.S. and international affiliates.

"Breast cancer touches almost every family," said Woody. She said what was exciting this year, in it's 20th year, is that Susan's daughters chaired the Race for a Cure, which is the largest single fundraiser for the organization.

She said that while big strides have been made in treatments, there is still a long way to go in finding a cure.

Woody noted that the funds will be used to provide grants for women in Pennsylvania who do not have health insurance, to have a mammogram.

The Lehighton Area Lioness Lions Club supports many Lions and community projects annually.
