Panther Vy. baseball, JT softball get wins

Panther Valley picked up a baseball win, while Jim Thorpe notched a victory in girls softball over the weekend as the scholastic spring sports schedule got into full swing.

Panther Valley scored runs early and picked up a 10-0 win in five innings.

Jeff Corby led the Panther attack, finishing three-for-three with a run and two RBIs. Ryan Porambo had a two-run double in the third, while Brandon Gurka added a two-run single in the same inning.

Gregory Pecha picked up the mound win striking out five.

The Olympians gave up six runs in the third inning and never recovered, dropping a 15-5 decision to Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg in a non-league contest.

Nick Agosto picked up the mound win for the victors, while also wreaking havoc at the plate as he finished 5-for-5 with a double and three RBIs.

Meanwhile, JT's Danny Russo was 3-for-3 with a run scored and one RBI, Ben Stermer was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Corey Cinicola added an RBI hit in the losing effort.

The Cavaliers downed host Palmerton 9-0 in a non-league shutout victory.

Ryan Fredrick was devastating on the mound, striking out eight in the seven innings for East Stroudsburg South.

Dan Fezza was 4-for-4, had three RBIs and scored twice, while JT Hartman was 2-for-4 and scored two runs as well.

For Palmerton, Aaron Cook recorded the only hits.

After taking a 4-0 lead after two innings, Weatherly was matched and surpassed, as West Side Vo Tech pulled off a come-from-behind 9-6 win.

Romonoski led the offensive charge with a 2-for-2 performance, scoring three times, and added two singles and an RBI. The star also picked up the mound win.

For the locals, Christian Ormiston was 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run, while teammate Kevin Hinkle was 2-for-3 with a single and two RBIs.

The West Side AVTS pitching staff compiled 14 strikeouts.

Jim Thorpe only needed four innings to run away with a 15-0 victory over Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg.

Lauren Mason led the Olympians with three singles and five RBIs, while teammate Ashley Tillou provided the firepower from the mound as she finished with a no-hitter.

Rhiannon Milliard chipped in with a triple and three RBIs for the Olympians.

Northwestern Lehigh-Emmaus

Emmaus jumped out early and never looked back on its way to a 9-2 non-conference victory over Northwestern Lehigh.

At Pate's Park, the Green Hornets' Kayla Kresley struck out 10 Tigers while allowing four hits. Meanwhile, teammate Jess Light had a perfect day at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance, which included a double, a homerun and five RBIs.

Jackie Wear paced the Tigers with a solo homerun in the fourth inning.

Mahanoy Area used the strength of solid pitching and timely hitting to run away with a 14-0 victory over host Panther Valley.

The Golden Bears' Steph Price allowed two hits and fired seven strikeouts to earn the win on the mound, while she also added a double at the plate.

The Bears' Hannock was the game's lone multiple hitter with a single and a double.

Sam Zlock and Kristen Knepper were the lone two Panthers to record hits off of Price. Zlock singled in the second and Knepper singled in the fifth inning.

A 10-run third inning sparked Southern Lehigh to a 13-1 win over host Tamaqua.

Cory Ozanne paced the Spartans with a single, double and a two-run homerun, while Katie Tankned finished with a double and a three-run homerun, which came in the prolific third inning.

Emily Zancofsky was the lone Blue Raider to record a hit off of the Spartans' pitcher Ashley Weiss, who finished with a one-hitter and seven strikeouts.

The Blue Raiders' Allie Zotak finished with 11 strikeouts on the mound.

Northwestern Lehigh

Northwestern posted itself a 2-1 win over Quakertown over the weekend in the Jahna Haldeman Foland Memorial Girls Soccer Tournament.

At Salisbury High School, Emily Iobst scored a first half goal for the Tigers, while Cassie Yost sealed the deal with a second half goal.

Shellie Cowan scored the Panthers' lone goal in the second half off an assist from Jordan Pursel.

The Tigers' keeper Kelly Boyd finished with five saves, while her counterpart Sarah Fothergill ended up with six.

TRACK

Jim Thorpe, Tamaqua at Pirate Invitational

Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua both traveled to Palisades to take part in the Pirate Invitational.

Allison Updike was the lone multiple winner for the Blue Raiders winning first place in the javelin and the shot put, while Marian Streisel earned a first-place finish in the girls' long jump. Streisel also added a third place in the javelin.

Christine Streisel made it a complete Blue Raider sweep of the javelin as she finished second between Updike and Maria Streisel.

Stacey Wallace added a second place in the discus, while Kayla Hope grabbed third in both the long jump and the 200 meter dash.

Meanwhile, Geoffrey Sincavage, Zachary Lakitsky, Justin Delp and John Scheitrum helped the Blue Raider boys score a third place in the 400 relay.

JV BASEBALL

Tamaqua-Lehighton

Lehighton posted a 7-2 victory over Tamaqua.

Darren Wanamaker had two hits and four RBIs for the Indians. Parker David also had two hits. Dalton Nunemacher had two hits for Tamaqua.

Lehighton pitchers Josh Kern and Anthony Farole combined to strike out 13 batters.
