Tigers, Colts, Bulldogs win on diamond

Northwestern, Marian and Northern Lehigh all picked up baseball victories on Friday.

BASEBALL

N'western-Palmerton

Adam Wehr had three hits and scored two runs to help Northwestern outscore Palmerton, 15-10, in a Colonial League contest.

The Tigers (2-3; 1-2) trailed 6-5 after two innings but used a five-run third frame to go ahead for good. Sean Nagle finished with two hits, two runs scored and three RBIs while teammate Colton Breininger had a pair of hits and scored three times.

For Palmerton, which has scored in double figures in three straight games, Aaron Cook had three hits and scored three runs. The Bombers (0-5; 0-3) also received three hits and two runs from Nick Brogan while Christian Marcin and Travis Labyack added two hits apiece.

Minersville-Marian

Marian posted its second straight mercy-rule victory, blanking Minersville, 10-0, in Schuylkill League action.

The Colts got a huge game from Joe Kloap. Kloap was the winning pitcher, striking out nine and allowing just four hits. He also belted a home run, a single, and scored three runs.

Marian (3-1, 2-0) also got offensive contributions from Matt Stawick (three hits, three RBIs, two runs) and Drew Sherkness (two hits, four RBIs, one run).

Pen Argyl-No. Lehigh

Joe Seremula tossed a four-hitter and struck out nine to lead Northern Lehigh to a 5-2 Colonial League victory over Pen Argyl.

Leading the way offensively for the Bulldgos (4-1; 3-0) were Jake Kern (three hits, two runs, one RBI); Matt Gill (double, triple, two RBIs) and Trevor Yashur (two hits, one run).

SOFTBALL

Pen Argyl-No. Lehigh

Taylor Presby pitched and hit her team to victory as Pen Argyl earned a 4-3 Colonial League win over Northern Lehigh.

Presby allowed three runs in the first inning but kept the Bulldogs scoreless the rest of the way. The Knights' hurler walked one and struck out eight. At the plate, she had two hits including a two-run triple.

Lindsay Ashworth also had two hits and an RBI for Pen Argyl (4-1; 3-0).

For the Bulldogs, who fell to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the CL, Julie Wagaman had a pair of hits and two RBIs. Wagaman also suffered the pitching loss despite striking out six. Erica Bowman chipped in with a hit and a run scored.

Hamburg-Tamaqua

Freshman Tara Klee struck out 20 batters and tossed a three-hitter to lead Hamburg to a 7-2 non-league victory over Tamaqua.

Jordan Nowacki had a pair of doubles and an RBI to lead Tamaqua offensively. Chey Bates added an RBI single.

Allie Sotak struck out 10 in a losing effort for the Raiders.

SOCCER

Pleasant Vy.-PM West

Kayla Dorney scored a pair of goals to help lead Pleasant Valley to a 3-0 Mountain Valley Conference win over Pocono Mountain West.

Dorney tallied the only score in the first half off a feed from Kelly Roden.

Aimee Sokolowski and Dorney added insurance goals in the second half, with Katie Forte picking up an assist on Sokolowski's score.

The Bears held a 12-5 edge in shots and had eight corners.

ES South-Lehighton

Lehighton held a 1-0 lead at halftime but East Stroudsburg South scored four unanswered goals in the second half to earn a 4-1 Mountain Valley Conference win.

Kacy Beck's shot from midfield gave the Indians (0-3) a 1-0 advantage.

The Cavs received two goals from Brielle Kessel in the second half with both tallies assisted by Carly Gallagher. South's other goals came from Nicole Grimaldi and Colleen Bergen.

Lehighton's Jourdan Semmel made 12 saves as the Cavaliers (2-3; 2-1) outshot their oppoenent 19-7.

MA-Northwestern

Katie Hallingstad scored a pair of goals to lead Northwestern to a 3-0 Colonial League win over Moravian Academy.

The two teams battled to a scoreless tie in the first half before Hallingstad finally got her team on the board. She added a second later in the half before Seneca Tucker gave the Tigers an insurance goal to make it 3-0.

Northwestern (4-2; 2-1) outshot the Lions 17-1 and had 10 corners.

Wilson-No. Lehigh

Wilson exploded for four second half goals to pull away from Northern Lehigh and post a 6-1 Colonial League victory.

Victoria Tadman-Ubele scored the Bulldogs' lone goal, tying the game 1-1 midway through the first half. But Wilson dominated play the rest of the way to pull away for the victory.

The Warriors held a 31-10 advantage in shots. Emily Mulcahy did her best to keep Northern Lehigh (0-6, 0-5) in the game as she made 25 saves.

TENNIS

MMI-Jim Thorpe

Jim Thorpe remained undefeated with an easy 5-0 victory over Freeland MMI.

Sam Lux, Zach Ligenza and James Denny all recorded singles victories for the Olympians (7-0), who posted straight set victories in all five matches.

Pocono Mountain West won all three singles matches and cruised to a 6-1 Mountain Valley Conference win over Lehighton.

The Indians managed just one victory in the match as Deb Lobien and Jes Lobien earned a straight set win at No. 2 doubles.

Pleasant Valley took all four doubles matches to help gain a 6-1 Mountain Valley Conference win over Pocono Mountain East.

The Bears also received singles wins from Justin Kemmerer and Dan Galante.

PV improved to 4-2 overall and 4-1 in the MVC.

Palisades earned its first win in Colonial League action by rolling to a 5-0 victory over Palmerton.

The Pirates won all five matches in straight sets, losing only 12 games.

Palisades is now 1-6 in CL play while the Bombers drop to 0-8.

Hazleton had no problem with host Tamaqua, cruising to a 5-0 victory.

The Cougars won all three singles matches, losing just five games. The winning doubles teams also won in impressive fashion, dropping just four games.
