Tigers, Indians, Bears perfect on diamond

Northwestern, Lehighton and Pleasant Valley all picked up baseball and softball wins over the weekend.

BASEBALL

Northwestern Lehigh-Jim Thorpe

Northwestern held off a late Jim Thorpe rally to secure a 4-3 non-league victory.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Tigers' Nate Kester threw out Zach Knox, who doubled and then tried to score on a Pat Janecki fielder's choice, spoiling Jim Thorpe's chances.

Kester paced the Tigers (3-2) with a triple and two RBIs, while Sean Nagle and Colton Breininger both chipped in with doubles.

Janecki led the Olympians (0-5) with two singles, a double, a run scored and two RBIs, while Knox finished with a single, double and a run scored. Danny Russo recorded a single, double and an RBI in the setback.

Lehighton (4-3, 0-1) exploded early on for a commanding lead and never looked back on their way to a non-league 14-1 win over Northern Lehigh.

In the five-inning game, the Indians' Kyle Hunter was two-for-two and scored four times. Jacen Nalesnik was a perfect 4-for-4, scored three times and had two RBIs. Dave Behler was two-for-four, had two RBIs and scored twice, while teammate Tyler Harris was 2-for-3 and scored twice.

For Northern Lehigh, Jake Kern's triple in the fourth inning led to him scoring his team's only run.

Easton-Pleasant Valley

Pat Kregeloh helped lift Pleasant Valley to a 6-5 non-conference win over visiting Easton.

With his team down 5-3 entering the seventh inning, Kregeloh relieved teammate Xavier Hammond on the mound. Kregeloh had the first batter he faced hit into a sacrifice fly and then struck out two in a row to end the inning.

After Chris D'Arcy walked and Derrik Walling singled, Kregeloh delivered a game-winning three-run home run with two outs to seal the come-from-behind win for the Bears. Kregeloh finished with a single, home run, two runs scored and four RBIs. Walling added two singles and three runs scored for the victors.

Pacchioli led the Red Rovers with two singles, a homerun, three runs scored and two RBIs.

Weatherly-MMI Prep

MMI used 13 hits against Weatherly to down the Wreckers, 10-4.

MMI's Joe Harnak was 3-for-4 with a double, while teammate Matt Farnell was 3-for-3 with three runs scored.

Nathan Pfeiffer was 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and two runs scored for Weatherly (0-5, 0-2). Keith Barna was also 3-for-4 with a double and scored a run.

Lehighton-Tamaqua

The Lady Indians utilized 16 hits in their non-league contest against Tamaqua for a 14-2 win.

The winners put together a nine-run sixth frame which blew the game open. In that inning, Emily Kollar pounded a grand slam for Lehighton.

Lauren Poremba had four hits on the day as well for the winners.

For Tamaqua, Chey Bates and Lauren Mateyak both had two hits in the losing effort.

ES South-Northwestern Lehigh

The Lady Tigers took the early lead and held on down the stretch for the 7-4 non-league win over East Stroudsburg South.

Jackie Wear led the offense for the locals with a 3-for-4 performance, compiling five RBIs. Lauren Horner was also three for four with three runs scored.

For ESS, Fryer was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

NW's Tori Papp had seven strikeouts on the mound for the pitching win.

The Bears (5-0) used a run in the bottom of the final inning to pull out the 8-7 come from behind win over the Red Rovers.

Aulra Bellis' 3-for-3 performance led the way for the locals, compiling three RBIs. Kasey Meckes had a two-RBI single, while Megan Hardy had a double and scored three times in the game.

Easton falls to 3-2 overall with the loss, with Rasley going 4-for-4 in the losing effort.

Ali Schuetz tossed a complete game one-hitter in Hazleton's 2-0 non-conference win over Marian.

The Cougars got all the run support they needed in the opening inning. With two runners on base, Shannon Salvaterra delivered a two-run double to give her team the lead for good.

The Fillies threatened in the bottom of the seventh. Abby Burkhardt was hit by a pitch. She moved into scoring position when the Fillies' Kayla Knight spoiled Schuetz no-hitter with a one-out single. Back-to-back ground outs ruined the Fillies' chances of tying the game.

Marian slips to 1-3 on the season, while Hazleton moves to 4-2.

Tri-Valley (4-1) started off strong and never looked back to run away with a 13-0 win over visiting Panther Valley.

The Bulldogs' Juli Weber had a big day on both sides of the ball. She had a no-hitter for four innings, while striking out nine Panthers (1-4) to earn the win and then finished as a multiple hitter with a single, a grand slam, two runs scored and five RBIs. Chelsea Stutzman added a single, a double, two runs scored and two RBIs.

Ellen Krajcir recorded the Panthers' lone hit by poking a single off of the Bulldogs' reliever Sam Wetzel in the fifth inning.

The Olympians' Sam Lux was victorious at number one singles, while the tandem of Mitch Franko and Dan Meader also picked up a win at number one doubles.

After a scoreless first half, Pleasant Valley scored twice to prevail with a 2-0 non-conference victory over Northampton.

Kayla Kisbausch and Kaiti Forte provided the Bears with those necessary goals to remain unbeaten at 2-0 on the season.

PV goalkeeper Jackie Guiliano grabbed seven saves to preserve the shutout victory.

No. Lehigh-Catasauqua

The Lady Rough Riders (1-5) recorded three first half goals en route to their first win of the season and a 5-0 shutout over host Northern Lehigh (0-6).

Sarah Kropf and Danielle Sierzega both scored two goals in the game, while teammate Melissa Fuhrman added a goal and an assist in the win. Erin Matz also assisted a score in the well-rounded effort.
