January 12, 1940 - Pulling surprise attacks in the second and fourth quarters, "Ossie" Maehrer's Mauch Chunk High quintet nosed out Bill Griffith's Nesquehoning team 37-25 in Black Diamond League play. Jim Thorpe reserve guard Bob Gilbert was the hero as his two shots from the side broke a tie and moments later the game ended. The Maehrermen held a 21-17 lead at intermission, but trailed 30-26 entering the final stanza. John Pancoe, Nesquehoning's big center, led all scorers with 10 points.
