It was announced today that March 26 will be a "dead" day as far as railroading is concerned in Lehighton. On that day, Packerton Shops, which at one time was the hub of repair work for the Lehigh Valley Railroad, will pass into the railroad's "great beyond" when all positions at the shops and the Lehighton engine house will be eliminated. Presently only 35 men are employed at the two facilities. Only 50 years ago, more than 1,000 men were employed at the shops and enginehouse.
