Panthers run winning streak to five

The Panther Valley boys and Marian girls rolled to basketball victories on Saturday.

Panther Vy.-SV

Panther Valley went on an 18-1 run during the second quarter and cruised to a 47-37 non-league victory over Shenandoah.

Brock Mitchell scored seven of his team-high 14 points to lead the Panthers' second quarter spurt. Logan Stano added 10 points for the Panther Valley (5-2), which won its fifth straight.

Despite Marian holding a three-point edge at intermission, visiting Meyers outscored the Colts by 10 in the second half for the 48-41 win.

Ryan Krawczenuk led the way for Meyers with 18 points behind four three-pointers.

For the Colts, Drew Sherkness finished with 14 and Ryan Gimbi's 13 were tops.

The Spartans (4-3) scored just three points in the third quarter, but bounced back in the final eight minutes to hand the Tigers a 51-48 non-league loss.

Zach Parnell finished with 16 points for the winners, while Steve Ennis added 13 and Zach Hogan 11.

Kevin Oxley led Northwestern (4-4) with a game-high 20 points.

The Bulldogs used a big second quarter to go up on the Wreckers and went on to a 39-30 win.

Matt McGinley had 18 points for Tri-Valley. Nathan Pfeiffer led Weatherly with 12.

The Fillies raced out to an 11-4 lead after one frame and never looked back in defeating non-league opponent Dallas, 47-20.

Kaysi McLaughlin led all scorers with 19 points on the day, while Gillian Ferko added nine in the win.

Two players scored five in the game for Dallas in the loss.

Despite a furious comeback attempt by the Lady Bears, Freedom was able to hold fast and pull out the 47-40 non-league win.

Nichole Calabrese led the charge for the Lady Patriots with 14 points on the night, while teammate Alexandra Wendt was close behind with 13.

For the locals, Megan Hardy's 11 and Kasey Meckes' 10 were high.

Freedom also won the JV contest with a 38-26 win.

Northwestern took part in a tri-meet with Saucon Valley and Notre Dame of Green Pond and came away with a split, downing Notre Dame 46-32 and dropping a 49-19 loss to Saucon Valley.

Individually, Northwestern had good showings from Dylan Long with two pins, Bobby Clymer won both of his and Brandon Miller picked up two, as well.

The Blue Raiders swam tough against perennial power Salisbury, and came away with a split against them, as the Raider girls won 102-78, while the boys dropped a 109.5-70.5 decision.

Individual firsts for the locals were corralled by Emily Bumbulsky in the 100 Breaststroke, while Katelin Hummel won the diving competition. The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Jordan Nowacki, Samantha Digilio, Schuyler Schmidt and Caroline Kanaskie took first, as well.

Tamaqua impoved to 5-0 on the seaon with a 53-20 rout of Pottsville.

Eleven different players scored for Tamaqua with Brett Kosciolek leading the way with nine points. Trevor Skripko, Connor Hartung, and Bo Rottet added eight points apiece.
